Anyone else into this show!? I can't wait for S5 to start soon!
I caught the IMAX showings of S4E09/10 in theaters, and it was gorgeous! I'm spoiled now. I want to see all future episodes like that. And the sound? Fuggeddaboutit!

**WARNING** I brush up against a spoiler in this post. Nothing overt, but if you're sensitive to such things, read at your peril.
I think the Game of Thrones show is very, very well done. I watched the first few seasons before cancelling my HBO to save money.
However, I am an even bigger fan of A Song of Fire and Ice. The books. I've read through them all multiple times and they are a huge inspiration to my campaign design. I discovered the series by searching through fantasy authors I didn't know on Amazon. Someone wrote a very negative review of the series. Their main complaints: the series wasn't finished, and they couldn't find a "hero" to identify with; every character was too flawed and there was too much moral ambiguity for this reader. He complained about "the only character he could identify with" being killed off early (hope I'm not spoiling!)
I immediately bought the first book, and never looked back. Moral ambiguity is the spice of any good story, IMO.
On a side note, last night one of my players requested more "moral dilemmas" in our campaign. I reassured him that there was plenty of moral ambiguity going on behind the scenes and that they just hadn't become aware of it yet. Soon...soon.

I love it for that very reason! I've read all the books so far, delved into many theories (I agree with R+L=J), and am really into the show as well.
Moral ambiguities make for awesome role-playing IMHO!
PS - friar, HBO will be offering their stand-alone on demand HBO:GO service soon. No need for the whole network.

I may actually start watching Game of Thrones. I heard about it when season 3 was going on and didn't want to take the time to get caught up to join everyone. I may start watching it to slowly but surely get caught back up. Well worth it I assume?

I am really torn by Game of Thrones (show) and ASoIaF books, I have watched the show faithfully and I enjoy it, I have read the first four books, but dont really like them. I think the overall story is cool, but I just feel he (GRRM) tries to hard to make things complex when they need not be. I also hate certain things about his writing style, like his constant need to describe every item of clothing on multiple character in a room, and along the same lines describe in detail every single meal that is ever eaten. This makes banquet scenes doubly painful because we get all the fashion, all the food and most of the time for no reason. Ya I get it, the big houses eat better than the beggars and lannisters always wear red/crimson/gold+lion symbols. It just bogs me down and doesn't add to the story. The section of the story I have enjoyed the most was the chapters from Damp Hairs perspective, the priest of the drowned god. But reading has just become a chore now and I own the 5th book, and have for over a year but haven't had the urge to pick it up. Also coming from a deep love of tolkien and a fully realized world ASoIaF just seems incomplete and therefore not real. I also feel like he really enjoys writing about rape and does so a little to often for my taste. So thats where I am at. I will keep watching the show and maybe one day I will read book 5. If you have any advice on how to overcome the obstacles let me know.

My only advice is to read book 5. Book 4 is a rough slog, but 5 is a lot better. As to your other complaints re writing style, I can't say it changes at all. I enjoy it, but I fully recognize that its not for everyone.
I just love how fleshed out the world is. Its downright amazing. I get the feeling that every character, even the most minor, has a full family tree written for them and a 1000 page back story. I love digging into the minutia.

I watched the first episode last night. Thought it was good. Still waiting for that moment where I become hooked though. It at the very least made me want to watch more.

Chris, I felt the EXACT same way upon first watch. I don't even think I watched EP2 right away, and when I decided to a few weeks later, I re-watched EP1 again first. I will say, this is a show that is GREAT for re-watches after you've watched a particular season. Sooooooo many "Oh snap!" moments early, that trigger things later on. Obviously, you wouldn't pick up on them upon first-watch.

I called my brother on my drive this morning to talk with him about the first episode and he simply said to pretty much everything I told him "Uh huh, yup that gets bigger later on in the show..." That was so annoying but I think that was what is making me want to go back and watch more when I get home tonight.

So thats where I am at. I will keep watching the show and maybe one day I will read book 5. If you have any advice on how to overcome the obstacles let me know. Depending on how long ago you read Feast for Crows (Book 4), you may want to re-visit in and do it in the "Tandem Read" style. GRRM broke his novel into two sections. Feast, and Dance. Giving full spotlight to half the characters in one book, and full to the other half in the next book. The Feast/Dance tandem read combines them all back into one, chronologically, like the previous books have been. So if you don't mind jumping from one book to the next back and forth as you read, I've found it's far more palatable. Feast/Dance Tandem Read

I am done with Season One and I must say the last two episodes really hooked me. I must control myself and not use all of my spare time to finish the rest of the seasons in two days.

Hahahaha classic, I remember when the first season came out, a bunch of my friends and I watched it but one guys didn't he was too cool. Then we finally convinced and all sat around waiting for the end of it. Lets just say when the thing happens with Mr. Stark. He just about put his hand through a small window in pure rage. He hasnt missed and episode since.
