I think this was my favorite episode so far. So many good ideas in there...many thanks to JM Perkins for sharing. I've seen his articles on Tribality, but kind of skipped over them. I'll be going back and reading now.
I am doing a bit of worldbuilding right now for a new series of campaigns very much inspired by things I have heard here. I've started off with a sort of loose timeline of big events. One time period that I sort skipped over is after a comet strike on the planet. This is supposed to be a horrible time when 90% of the world's population of all races die off. The radiation of the comet is the source of arcane magic and this causes changes in many races and animals and is the origin of halflings, dwarves, goblins, orcs, etc.
I have laid plans for campaigns in each time period, but never intended to do one in this time of upheaval after the comet falls. Now I am rethinking that. I'm thinking that this is the time period to place a survival/horror campaign in. So looking forward to it

I really enjoyed getting good ideas for survival and horror. I'm definitely going to pepper in some of these ideas if my players decide to stay in the dungeon they are delving for too long. As a huge Walking Dead fan it was really cool to think of how close that world really is to a D&D campaign, and how easy it could be to have Friartook's comet carry with it the plague of undeath. Also, DMC that thing will haunt me I'm sure. I can just imagine driving down the road on in the middle of the night, starting to nod off a little, and BAM! that creepy son of a b is staring you right in the face, haha.

It dawned on me that I have recently written an article about a game that embodies Survivalist and Horror, and would be a great place to get inspiration for either. Check it out if you feel so inclined! www.themarriedgamers.net/review/darkest-dungeon/

I was leading to a transition from a heroic campaign, to survival/horror when I was running 4e. Unfortunately the group disbanded before we got that far into the story.
Still, another great episode! The meat was great, but I got a big kick out of story time too.

Yes, and I am sure the creepy, psionic cat lady causes the apocalypse in D&D. That much is certain.

Werecats-Gnome size lycanthropic cats. And their crone witch "mother". That is where I will go with this when the time is ripe.

It would be hilarious if after the psionic cat lady destroys the world (or maybe is destroyed) the players, for some odd reason, don't mind the smell of cat urine. And they probably would never realize what that means...

Just finished this episode today. Loved some of the things discussed in it. Really love the idea of diseases and world/region ending catastrophes. And love the diseases people are creating over in the DM-Nastics 6 thread. I am a pretty new DM so I dont know how well me or my players would be able to manage things like weight, inventory management, food and water consumption, but they are all things I would really love to attempt or at least present to my players as options. What I would love to hear or read about is a combo of the survival gameplay style with the underwater campaign stuff. What would an apocalypse/post apocalypse look like in the ocean or deep seas? would it be cause by pollution from irresponsible surface dwellers? or would it come from within the waters? I guess I am saying you need to have JM Perkdaddy and Rich Howsauce back on the podcast for a combo episode!

I guess I am saying you need to have JM Perkdaddy and Rich Howsauce back on the podcast for a combo episode! That would be awesome! You could even make it so that everyone had to escape undersea to avoid the apocalypse! So now you have everyone living in underwater domes trying to survive.

I thought about the domes before reading your post Almarianknight. Then I started thinking that a bunch of people could have intentionally capsized boats and live in a society that exists through connected boats. Sending the adventurers out to try and reclaim dry land. I would LOVE to hear Rich Howard and J M Perkins on the same episode in a collaborative manner.

As long as the campaign doesn't start with a mutant drinking his own pee...
