Hey guys, need a little help with this scenario. The princess is marrying a foreign prince to secure an alliance between two nations next month, and the aristocracy wants a 3 week tournament to go with the wedding.
What sort of events should the tournament have? So far I have:
1. Melee Free for All: The money making part of a medieval tournament. Participants get to knock out enemies, force them to surrender and hold them hostage. At the end of the day, the captured fighters' sponsors or families will pay ransom. It's like tag, except manly.
2. 1 v 1: This is one of the opening events, where fighters can display their fighting prowess on stage. If they do well, they might pick up additional sponsors. There will be a healthy amount of gambling and prize for the best fighter too. As for format, I was thinking that the winner will stay on the stage until they get defeated by a challenger, etc.
3. Joust: This one I am not sure about. A halfling on a mastiff vs a wyvern rider doesn't sit well with me.
4. Archery: Standard competition, hit an AC 15 target as many times as you can within 10 rounds, or break a target with 100 hp from 60 ft. Shooting at each other is another option.
5. Mage Battle: This is where the wizards, sorcerers, bards and every caster go at it. Countering the counterspell, etc. It could get wild really quickly, but luckily I don't have a magic user in the party.
There are a few things I have not decided yet:
1. In a world where dying costs 500-1000g, would it be more entertaining to use real weapons or should blunted weapons be provided?
2. As a follow up question, should there be a penalty in killing your opponents?
3. Should I even separate casters, archers and melee sub-types or just let them brawl?
