The Inn of Fate
Created by the God Kord, the Inn of Fate is an Inn that exists somewhere in the multiverse. The only way to leave is through challenges, adventure, and battle that are all dreamed up by Kord. Champions who have committed some treachery and now face trail in the afterlife are given a second chance. You were chosen by Kord himself and you were brought to the Inn of Fate upon death, to entertain the God through trails of strength, courage, and battle prowess. This is your chance for redemption from your deeds of the past life.
Can you prove your worth to Kord and redeem your soul?

So here is my idea. This "Inn of Fate" is a one-shot generator, but with the ability to maintain the same characters, teams, or mix of characters to interact in the same "Campaign" world. The campaign world though is comprised of one-shots, or short adventures. What I am looking for is help building out this idea, and then maybe one-shot adventure ideas for the Inn.
Now some might say, "But DM Kiado, why not just play one shots? Why this?" and to those I might warily say "Yes, why not. But.. Why not play them with a twist, and a way to tie them together while still being different?" A common gripe I have and often hear is that rarely the same players can get together the same times each time to finish a campaign, so maybe we can make a way to facilitate the interference of life into our fantasy gaming through a setting with that in mind from the start.
The question is, how do I/we give it a twist. Well that is pretty much why I am here Blockheads. For your lovely ideas, thoughts, suggestions, contempt, or disdain. Is this is silly idea or does this have merit?
I would like to think of it as a way to maintain a database of characters, perhaps for a group of friends, an online VTT like Fantasy Grounds or Roll20. Perhaps one quick adventure is for pre-made characters (reliving a moment in a heroes life perhaps) that your friends just pick the ones they want to play. Maybe they maintain their own characters, that just sit and enjoy the amazing ale, superb heavenly food, and lovely wait staff when they are missing from your session, and your other characters continue on without him. You are like a cosmic gladiator, trying to free your soul from eternal damnation by redeeming yourself in the eyes of Kord. (You could replace Kord with any god, switch out reasons for being there, etc. but I went with Redemption and the god Kord.) Kord has an agreement with the other Gods, that he can take the occasional soul for redemption, and they essentially become his play thing.
Why an Inn you say? Because all good adventures begin in an Inn.
Things I want to make:
- Customer Afterlife Backgrounds - "Treachery"
What did you do in life that requires you to redeem your soul? I am thinking things like Turncoat, Murderer, Oath-Breaker, Heretic, Betrayer and/or things of that nature. These would replace standard backgrounds and reflect your chance at redemption while recognizing your wrongs that got you here. - "Anything goes" adventures, on "anything goes" worlds.
What ways would Kord dream up to test former adventurers, and fallen heroes? Dungeons? Great Battles? Reliving heroic moments? - Redemption Points.
The points would replace Inspiration, and could be used for a myriad of things from re-rolling, getting a different adventure, upgrading a weapon before your next run. Something to that effect anyways, but with balance and something interesting.
Questions to answer:
- What is the purpose or how do you achieve redemption? Is there a point system? A ladder system? Above mentioned Redemption points? How do you get redemption from Kord?
- Are all characters reset to level 1 to earn their prowess before Kord? Do they transfer straight over with a new "Treachery" background?
- Any other question someone might ask about this (I am sure there could be many or few.) Should it be that detailed or does it defeat the purpose?
- And most importantly, is this idea even worth exploring?
I will leave my thoughts at that for now.
