Haha! I know! It sounds ridicule, ous! But I guess I could be forgiven... look at the sith to this point. Darth Vader, evil killing cyborg. Emperor Palpatine, a shriveled up evil monster. Maul a black/red skinned, demon horned, duel wielding fiend. And that one sith who also made me think of Saruman every time I see him, but he is in the second movie, which is one of the worst anyway. And now you have Ben who is... normal? Wel they all looked normal until they then got disfigured by something. As I say to all that want more things from the movie "there will be more to come". He is going to have some bad ass scar and i bet a different hair cut and probably a bigger temper. I am actually gld he did look "normal". I like the casting for the whole movie. I never understood why when they turn dark side they start getting yellow red eyes. I am sure it is explained in some book but to me that just seemed like a prequel weirdness. Too true. Even though I make fun of his Sithliness, Ben Solo was probably the best part of the movie for me. It felt as if they were appeasing the part of me that was sore after having the lore of years and years spent reading the books. It gave me something similar to the books to geek out over that still retained a completely different fascination with. Though, to put it plainly, Jacen Solo was a lot more Sith .

Oh man I've been away. I had so many comments as I was reading these, but then other people made them in follow-up points haha.
I mostly agree with the positive crowd. I did love the movie, and was super excited while I was watching it. However, it DID bother me that it was basically the exact same plot as A New Hope.
My random thoughts:
My biggest gripe: That super weapon made no sense. It used up the system's star to fire? Wouldn't that just kill that system as well. How do they fire a 2nd round (which they did) - or how would they continue to fire once all stars in the system were used up. Is it using stars out of the system? If so, why not just suck up one enemy's star and fire at another enemy - double the efficiency. But really, what they implied was it sucked up the "sun" - like an eclipse somehow, as if the star would be cool missing it's bottom half - and then fires through hyperspace to kill a planet.....but then somehow does it again cause you know....more suns? Sun recovers?. It was just too arm wavy to me. I get that it's Star Wars and we need to suspend some disbelief, but come on. There were infinite possibilities here. How about a super weapon that wasn't big, round, and fired at a planet?
I had no issue with Rey beating Kylo. He was incredibly wounded, dealing with an internal struggle, and worn out from fighting someone else. Also, she'd proven to be stronger in the force, and neither were using any type of formal sword training. She showed her efficiency at fighting with a staff earlier in the movie, and Ren just beat things really hard with his anger - which was lacking a bit at that point.
I had no issue with Finn holding him off a bit. I mean Ren was kicking his butt - he just delayed it. He's a storm trooper that has surely trained to fight with vibro weapons.
I liked Kylo Ren. Sure, I was a bit disappointed when the mask came off, but finally we have a Sith Lord that really shows his anger and the power of it. All we've heard for 6 movies is to give in to your anger and really unleash the power of the dark side - and we've seen snippets (Luke getting angry at Vadar, etc.), but this was the first time a Sith Lord was constantly losing his temper and unleashing raw fury. Loved that.
Much like Luke came about after the fall of the Jedi, and was only partially trained and unsure how to behave like the Jedi's of old - it makes sense that Kylo Ren would be powerful but not quite as versatile with his powers as the Sith of old. He felt like the dark side version of Luke in episode V and that was cool.
I loved the scene with Poe flying around shooting fighters and troopers fluidly. They didn't just say he was the best pilot - they showed it.
I'm going to be annoyed if Rey is related to Luke or Han Solo. It would just be too cheap at this point. There are billions in the galaxy - that's enough in one family. I didn't have an issue with Kylo Ren being a Solo, but her also being one of them would take it too far. I've seen the theories.
There better not be a death star version 4.
And my absolutely favorite part:
Rey was amazing. I thought she was one of the best female lead characters portrayed in a movie. Where most movies either over sexualize their female heroes, or they make them more "badass" in a male way to make them seem tough - Rey was just great. She was competent, smart, flawed, decent in a fight but that wasn't what defined her, and 3 dimensional. I think she might be the best all around non-flat Jedi character yet. To me this made the movie great, and I'll root hard for her through the next few films.

While I kinda agree with you, the Star Wars movies have always been the Skywalker storyline. I think it is pretty much a done deal that she is Luke's daughter. At this point I am just accepting it and moving on. If I am wrong though, boy will I be excitedly surprised when I see Ep 8

Just a hunch...

I truly feel like this was based off of a WMD from the books. In the books there is a ship that can cause chain reactions in a star which causes it to erupt, blowing up the entire solar system. Probably no connection, but they seemed similar enough. 2. A stormtrooper who was a sanitation worker... trained with vibroblades? Just kidding. 3. Well at least it doesn't have a single destruction port that can take the entire planet sized station out with two torpedoes. These Star's are, at the very least, improving. 4. Sounds sort of like Leia from back in the day.

1. I guess my issue was the science behind the weapon doesn't even come close to passing the common sense rule. I'm okay with suspending a lot of disbelief, but the way it was described (and glossed over) would make it not believable for anything passed middle school science. That's just too much, and too vague. It didn't ruin the movie for me or anything, but I hate everything about the super weapon.
2. I know you're kidding but I've seen people make this point in earnest. I took it as he was a real Stormtrooper - fully trained. The sanitation bit was either a joke, or simply the fact that I'm sure trained soldiers are assigned other tasks when not patrolling or training. Basically, he was on Latrine duty!
3. Yeah no kidding
4. I'm not sure I'm behind Leia as quite fitting the same role. She wasn't the lead for one thing, and she wasn't quite as 3 dimensional. She definitely hit some of the old tropes. I liked her character, I'm not trying to detract from her - and for the time it was also a refreshing strong female character, but I feel like Rey took another step forward and was also the lead.
Laser: I'm pretty much just accepting as well. It's another point that I won't like, but won't ruin it for me. Luke better have a damn good reason for deserting her and then deserting the galaxy! I just really wish they'd get away from the "I am your father" a little. It was great, but let's not over play it. And if they are going to have her being his daughter I think maybe another direction with Kylo Ren would have been good. Maybe Snope is related to Yoda - his first padawan or something.

I believe the Stormtrooper sanitation worker was a knod to Kevin Smith on his clerks movie. They had a discussion in the movie about 3 party workers that died in the Death Star. "
Randal: So they build another Death Star, right? Dante: Yeah. Randal: Now the first one they built was completed and fully operational before the Rebels destroyed it. Dante: Luke blew it up. Give credit where it's due. Randal:And the second one was still being built when they blew it up. Dante: Compliments of Lando Calrissian. Randal: Something just never sat right with me the second time they destroyed it. I could never put my finger on it-something just wasn't right. Dante: And you figured it out? Randal: Well, the thing is, the first Death Star was manned by the Imperial army-storm troopers, dignitaries- the only people onboard were Imperials. Dante: Basically. Randal: So when they blew it up, no prob. Evil is punished. Dante: And the second time around...? Randal: The second time around, it wasn't even finished yet. They were still under construction. Dante: So? Randal: A construction job of that magnitude would require a helluva lot more manpower than the Imperial army had to offer. I'll bet there were independent contractors working on that thing: plumbers, aluminum siders, roofers. Dante: Not just Imperials, is what you're getting at. Randal: Exactly. In order to get it built quickly and quietly they'd hire anybody who could do the job. Do you think the average storm trooper knows how to install a toilet main? All they know is killing and white uniforms.

And this is where you stick these ideas together. Ask Finn, apparently Storm Troopers do know how to install toilet mains. Problem solved on both ends. . It does make sense for Finn to be a fully trained Storm Trooper and to be assigned a specific station on the S.K.

Lorewise, it is actually explained in the new visual guide that stormtroopers have a cycle of duties they go thru. They are not just stormstroopers, they are flametroopers, riot troopers (like TR-8R), and even sanitation workers
