<script id="th-iframe-script" src="chrome-extension://ofdopmlmgifpfkijadehmhjccbefaeec/assets/comms/commsiframe.js"></script>Took some time to decide on a good idea relating to the Underdark, but I think I may have found one! Here are a few pictures of real life underground places that are as inspiring as it gets, and here they are! 1. The Catacombs of Paris (Paris, France) 2. Cave of Crystals (Chihuahua, Mexico) 3. Reed Flute Cave (Guilin, China) 4. Škocjan Caves (Slovenia) 5. Fingal's Cave (Staffa, Scotland) 6. Waitomo Glowworms Cave (New Zealand) 7. Marble Caves (Patagonia, Chile) Grab one of these, or post one of your own inspiration from the depths of this world or another! What lives in this space? How was it created? What is this place called? What features can be used against your players? How far into the Underdark is this location? Anything else to make it even more awesome!? Hope you guys enjoy these pictures as much as I liked finding them. Edit: added some more real world images

1. The tunnels of bone. These bone lined tunnels are inhabited by the self-blinded monks of the dark god of insanity, Kelemoth. The monks must take a series of vows followed by a trial in order to advance to full monkhood. The final vow of the monks is a self-mutilation ritual where they cut out their own eyes. They are then sent into the underdark alone to kill a sentient creature with the knife they use to cut their eyes out and to bring back it's skull, or similar structure. If successful the monks place their prize in the Tunnels of shadow and bone where the bones of the faithful are held aloft by the bones of the unfaithful and the prizes. This temple of Kelemoth is in the middle-dark and accepts all who are believers. However, if you do not take the first vow, which states you must serve the temple until your death, you are immediately attacked and killed your bones taken to the Tunnels of shadow and bone. If you wander into the temple's territory you are considered an supplicant wishing to join the temple. The monks do not keep any illumination near them as Kelemoth, and the fact they are blind, teaches that the mind is expanded when sight is removed as a distraction. dungeonsandtulu.wordpress.com/

2. The Earth's Teeth The Earth's Teeth are relatively close to the surface, serving as as sort of a unoffical border between Dwarven mines and the actual Underdark. Traveling through the Teeth is the only non-magical way to go deeper into the Underdark. Miners in search of fortune are often drawn to the Teeth, not because wanting to get to the Underdark, but because of the pure and highly condensed salt which make up the Earth's Teeth However mining there is extremely dangerous because Bholes use this area as a spawning ground, leaving their children to feed on the salt. Any large operation could disturb and summon these children, which are much smaller then an adult Bhole, but still as dangerous. Other dangers include the Cave Fishers which hid atop the higher salt formations in wait for miners, and Whitemantles who use their bleach white color to hide on the salt formation. There are other creatures that sometimes venture into the Teeth to hunt, but because Bhole's use it as a spawning ground, only creatures that can hide, like Cave Fishers and Whitemantles, stay amongst the Teeth. While the Teeth hold deadly creatures and is difficult to climb around, its most dangerous feature is the fact that any light source is amplified 3 fold because of the white salt formations that make up the entire place. Thus making sure creatures that want to eat you are well aware of your presence hundreds of feet before you are in sight. Another danger is slipping, as the Earth's Teeth are oriented downward and further into the Underdark, a slip will cause you to go tumbling down further and further as you are literally chewed up by the earth.

Picture 3.
The Fungal Expanse
There, at the gateway to the darkened expanse that is the Illithid city Drl'kullatihk, lies an almost endless field of fungi. So endless, in fact, that it is its mere expansive nature that drew its common name. It is not uncommon for the Illithid to have their cities surrounded by the protective spores of some of the myriad of perpetually deadly fungus that roots within the Underdark but there is something about the Expanse that makes it unique, the very veins of magic that channel through this area gives the fungus a truly unearthly glow, iridescent and at times, blinding amongst the blackness of the Illithid interior. But mixed in with the clouds of toxic spores and the free flowing magic is the ever present influence of the Illithid Elder Brain, seeking any sentience it can grasp its tendrils around and indeed, the nature of the fungus and the corruption of the Underdark seeps into the expanse giving rise to almost mindless spore husks that surround the city and inhabit the expanse. Fungal drones, driven by the command of the Elder Brain to protect the city from all comers.
Of course the beauty of the Expanse can not be denied, after weeks of travelling through the Underdark to be met with a rainbow of colours reflecting off the mithril rich ceiling of the cavernous maw of the chamber, one would almost be forgiven for being momentarily distracted as you take your first steps within the fungal forests, that is until the fungal drones come upon with an eerie stillness, forcibly choking spores down your resisting gullet, if the act itself does not suffocate you then you'll wish it did, as mere hours after the occurrence the fungal spores will erupt from beneath your flesh and consume your mind, making you into yet another of the countless husks that serve the Elder Brain.
I imagine this being in the lower Underdark, and that it has been around for longer than the Illithid city was set up. Indeed I like the idea that it may even be possible that the Elder Brain has been somewhat affected by long exposure to the spores and may itself be a part of the expanse. Think "The Last of Us" but with Illithid.

The Wintery Absolute The caves of the underdark are strange and alien to an outsider. The farther down one goes, they stranger they appear. Deep deep down into the depths of the underdark is a cave without light or sound. Without warmth for heat. It is so cold and frozen that it is said Time itself stops there. Made up entirely of ice and darkness, The Absolute is mentally dangerous to explore. Few have returned from its depths with their sanity intact. Nothing lives here besides the darkness. There is one large sheet of nearly clear ice that reflects everything in this strange and twisted cavern. Here, there is no telling what is up or down, friend or foe, exit or entrance. It breathes darkness and ensnares the mind as well as the body.

4. The great expanse The 50ft wide bridge spans a gap countless as many times as long. Who built this bridge in the middle dark to span this gap? Are they watching us right now? The bridge is immaculately maintained, but is it simply magic or something more sinister? It was in fact built by the magic of a long lost wizard, and maintains itself through the creatures that live beneath the bridge. They are trolls because the wizard thought it most ironic to do, and they keep the area lit to attract things from throughout the Underdark as well as to allow them to see what is happening. The trolls have set up living areas beneath the bridge, and do well to gauge the power of those that are crossing and leave well enough alone when the odds aren't quite in their favor. Their population is culled because they get too ambitious from time to time when their numbers are too great.

Did a little digging around on google images to find one that inspired a story at a glimpse. This obviously belongs in "or another" when it comes to selecting an image "from this world or another!" The Houses of Cadyr Tzithes: More than a thousand years ago, the demon prince Shazramatix gained entry to the mortal plane, and in his wake thousands of fiends followed. Spawned from a portal deep in the underdark where his Duergar priests foolishly summoned him -- and perished with his emergence -- the infernal forces threatened to overrun the surface world. The surface dwellers above were already engaged in widespread warfare with one another when the demons began their rampage, but the various magical institutions across the continent set aside their national interests, and allied to drive the fiends back. Ultimately, they were successful, but could not completely banish Shazramatix. Instead they imprisoned him in the Godstomb, a powerful artifact of their own construction, devised for this very purpose. Yet it proved insufficient to contain the demon prince by its own power, and required the constant will of some of the world's most powerful mages to maintain. While the alliance still lasted, they formed the floating fortresses which would come to be known as the Houses of Cadyr Tzithes, whose name derived from an ancient tongue and meant "We Too Are Prisoners." In each of the floating fortresses reside the once-mortal archmagi who defeated Shazramatix. They each assumed a form of undeath similar to lichdom to oversee the eternal burden of containing the demon. The immense magical power required to do so cannot be sustained by any individual, or even a group, in perpetuity. The twin fortresses exist to relieve one another of this great burden, taking shifts and exchanging places over the Godstomb every ten days. This cycle has gone undisturbed for over a thousand years. The path through the underdark to the immense cavern where dwells the Godstomb and the Houses of Cadyr Tzithes is relatively easy to find and follow. However, neither surface dweller nor underdark denizen is foolish enough to approach two dozen liches and their demon prince prisoner. Yet a few who have dared to spy it from a distance describe a curious microbiome leading to the floating Houses, where trees, grass and flowers from the surface thrive. Some speculate this too is the work of the liches, who have created a memory of the surface to make their existence bearable.

Took some time to decide on a good idea relating to the Underdark, but I think I may have found one! What features can be used against your players? How far into the Underdark is this location? Anything else to make it even more awesome!? 5: The mines of Dru'hanfal. Mostly populated by duergar and deepgnomes, but the dwarves dug too deep and hit a mystic watersource flooding the floors of the mine and covering it with a otherwordly mist as well as beings that thrive in it. Since the floor was no longer usable the gnomes devised a series of pathways along the walls as well as crafting traps that would force invaders into the misty depths of the mine. The pathway to the dwarven settlement is covered with glowing magical gems that seems to protect it, seeing as the paths where the gems have gone out has been destroyed by what seems like tendrils, and if they are not sufficently quiet when traveling you can see movement in the mist as if something is readying itself to attack. The dwarven settlement is built along the walls and even on the ceiling of the mine, it is covered with glowing gems to protect it from that which lurks, But there are places that have holes in them, almost as if it was made to throw things down into the mist. The lurking in the mist can be all from an aboleth to just mutated water sprites, all to the DM fiat.

All of these are awesome! They remind me why I love spelunking so much. The underdark is going to be an amazing (but still fearful) place to travel to... especially with these caves.

I'm currently debating what goes in and what doesn't from things that have happened before, but given that these forums are public and we promote DM piracy (take ideas and make them yours) by all means take them! Especially these as a decent majority are real world photos, haha. I am going to have to make some decisions by Tuesday Night that's for sure! Haha.

From the episode:
What if the lifeblood of those glow-worms facilitate the humanoid into becoming essentially a breeding ground for the worms?
