So in my latest sessions I wanted them to do a dungeon crawl through an area that has been infested with all of these carnivorous plants. Mostly because I hadn't used that type of monster in a long time, and have always found it to be fun.
Only, after I wrote it, I realized that it was kinda bland.
So I changed the dungeon to a crypt that was infested with plants (which I called the Wrathvine). The sudden appearance of the Wrathvine angered the spirits of the dead that were laid to rest there and they began to rise from their graves. So as the dungeon went on, the players began to face not just plants, but began to encounter zombies and skeletons that were roaming around.
I was very careful in my descriptions as to drop hints that the undead were not harmful, and were only interested in the Wrathvine. Luckily one of my players noticed and convinced our paladin to not just smite the abominations.
They then have some role-play interactions to convince all of these different clans to discard their feuds from their past lives and unite in a single force to take on the Wrathvine host. Each clan of undead being a tongue and cheek nod to the different types of zombies from the Plants Vs Zombies game (medieval versions of course).
For each clan that the players convinced, it removes one type of minion that is protecting the boss (all of course themed from the different plants from the video-game).
Needless to say it was amazing! The players went through the whole dungeon without picking up the references, and felt all awesome for convincing these undead to help them out. There was also this moment during the boss where it finally dawned on them what was actually going on and led to this hilarious moment where they suddenly changed their strategies and started behaving like the zombies from the video-game and ordered the clans to behave in ways that were like the harder levels.
I will be doing a writeup of the various monsters and stuff I used in case you all want to use this dungeon. Gotta say it's one of my favorite I have done in quite a while.
