Hey, folks!
I've been wandering in and out of the forums since December, so I thought I might introduce myself. Like a lot of folks, I inherited D&D gear as a kid in the '80s. I played a bit of AD&D with my cousins and then with friends in high school, but it was sporadic. I still mourn the loss of that vast crate of manuals that disappeared when our gaming space (sadly) morphed into a party space.
Fast forward about 15 years. I'm a 30-ish mother of two, teaching writing at a local university, blessed with a marvelous tribe of nerdy friends. One night we had too many people for the board game we'd planned to play, so I pulled my dusty 3.5 manuals off the shelf and we all rolled up characters. We've been playing that game for about 2 years now and have hived off a couple additional campaigns: one in Waterdeep and one in my steampunk homebrew world. Mostly we run 3.5, but we've tinkered around with FATE, D20 Modern, World of Darkness, and now 5e.
I love Tolkien, Ursula K. LeGuin, medieval lit., Adventure Time, and podcasts while commuting. I just finished my master's degree in English, so it's been nice to have free time to read genre fiction again and contemplate moving some of my RPG tinkering on-line. I'd like to get involved with RPG writing or podcasting, but am still seeking a niche...there's so much great content floating around that it almost seems silly to add another voice to the chorus. My current RPG projects involve converting my steampunk campaign to 5e and a "Do Andriods Dream of Electric Sheep?" homebrew.

The gateway...board games! Official welcome to the forums. Glad you have been around and love the story about how your players started. Congrats on finishing the masters degree! I look forward to the day when I have time to read books other than for my degree! I envy that.

I look forward to the day when I have time to read books other than for my degree! I envy that. Thanks, man. It was a rough haul when the D&D fever struck hardcore and I was taking a full class-load + working + editing a textbook. Many late homework nights to balance out those late nights of heroism. Luckily I have a commute, so I was able to do most my DM planning on the road and gain some resources listening to ya'll's podcast.
What are you studying?

Oh man, when I was working full time, in my masters, and a daughter in the hospital for four months the commute and podcasts were my saving grace. That and writing for a gaming website for a time so I could mentally get away. Ended up with an MBA, a healthy daughter, and a better job, so all in all it worked out, haha. What was/is your goal with getting your masters?

I'm glad to hear you made it through your travails. It's tough to juggle it all....but worth it.
My master's is in English and it was honestly an attempted move from teaching at the high school (my 1st degree was a BSE in English Education) to college level. Having found a university job (in a writing center), I suppose that's mission accomplished...though now that I'm in the field, I'm becoming aware that for the job I really want (direct a writing center or a writing across the curriculum program) I'll probably need a PhD. Blarg!
