Hey everyone! I've read a lot of your ideas and I think you all are very creative and certainly far more experience than I am. I was wondering if you all had any suggestions for me. I'm planning an encounter for this weekend, and here are all my ideas so far. I feel like I've got a lot going on, but I want this to be very memorable.
Encounter:
Party:
5 level 5 players. 1 level 5 NPC that they might ask to come along.
Enemies:
Lots of apes and a couple dire apes, and when triggered, a giant (king kong-sized) ape.
Location:
A tree top village about 100 feet off the ground. The trees will be connected by a series of bridges of some kind. In my mockup, they're rope bridges, but this doesn't seem like a thing that an ape would use, so I intend to use huge (5ft wide) tree branches instead. When the players arrive at the tree village, they will have perform certain checks to climb up the vines on the tree to get to the top.
Goal:
Find a group of captured fairies (that are fed to the giant ape) and escape the village.
Terrain:
The tree village is a collection of simple structures wrapping around massive tree trunks (20-30 feet wide). There are vines that hang from the canopy overhead. These can be used to swing across large distances between the trees in single turns. The apes and the dire-apes will be able to utilize this terrain more easily than the players. The players may also attempt this, but they will be required to drop or stow their weapons, roll to succeed, with failure potentially meaning a 100ft fall. I think the apes should have to roll if the players have imposed disadvantage on them somehow, but I don't have a solid system for this yet. The players may also be able to find some way to destroy the branches, though that will likely hinder themselves more than the apes.
Upon Finding the Fairies:
Upon discovering the fairies, the players will hear a giant roar and the crashing of trees in the distance as the king kong ape returns. If they free the fairies, they will be able to cast fly on each member of the party. Then there should be a chase scene of the monster toppling over huge trees and hucking massive boulders at them as they escape. I'm thinking of having acrobatics checks to dodge boulders while also not running into trees or getting caught in vines.
Considerations: One of the players has a Cloak of the Bat, so he should be able to scout ahead and report back the lay of the land without alerting the apes.
My questions/concerns are this:
- Is the terrain enough to make fighting a bunch of apes who can only punch or throw rocks interesting?
- Do you have any suggestions on a mechanical system I should use for swinging between trees?
- Being 100ft off the ground and then entering into a chase scene with a king-kong sized ape, I'm toeing the line of save or die scenarios. Are there fallbacks to failure I should consider without removing too much tension?
- Any other suggestions or concerns you have that I missed?
- There are no traps or puzzles or really even mysteries to solve. Is this an issue?
Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated! Thank you
