So my Homebrew world is sort of the good the bad and the ugly meets eberron. Lots of wide open spaces and small Isolated towns. Anyone that can't handle a melee weapon or a bow buys them a wand, rod or staff that can at least manage a couple magic missiles. It's very Wild West, and the players are exploring an ancient pyramid as often as they're foiling a bank robbery or engaging in a duel in the Main Street at high noon.
Well, I want to have a rodeo come to town, and would like some ideas for events that the players could potentially enter. When they inevitably win, outlaws are going to stage a distraction then make off with the prize money, trophy belt buckles and saddles (all magic items) and give the players a reason to go after them. We're going to be playing 4th edition since well, we all started playing with that edition and we all miss it a bit. Maybe we're all just masochists, who knows?
What I'm asking is two things, first, What are some fun Wild West, yet D&D themed events the players can compete in?
Second, what would a good mechanic be to determine results?
I'm thinking something like Purple worm riding, rhinoceros wrestling, (I use rhinos instead of cattle in this world just because I like them. Lol) maybe some sort of mounted target shooting? I recall there was a worm rodeo mentioned on the podcast but I can't remember if there was anything else
I want each event to be fun and challenging, yet not take too long so that we don't take too long on each one.
Maybe each event is a skill challenge with modifiers or advantage added depending on how well they roll? For example worm riding they roll initiative vs the creature and whoever does better can make their first opposing roll with advantage, acrobatics vs the creatures strength mod, perception vs creatures intelligence mod, endurance vs its constitution mod. Maybe three rounds per player, and each one the other players can assist to add a +2, yelling advice, waving their hat at the worm so it bucks in the correct direction? I'm just kind of typing as I think.
Any input would be appreciated, thanks guys!
