So to keep my creative DM juices flowing I've been working on developing a Majora's Mask adventure module. Essentially it'll run through all the points of the game, but be converted to a 5th edition rule set.
So while I'm working on it, I figure I'll share some of the ideas I've had with all of you
-
To start with, I want to keep the gameplay hook or reiterating through the same few days over and over until you win. I'd change these iterations to be a week instead of three days, since things in D&D take longer to do with added realism and I want to expand the scale of the world. There also would be much more limited fast travel. Since there's different item mechanics, I couldn't just have players lose their cash and accessories when they reiterate through time, instead I'd use the encumbrance mechanic, they can only take as much back with them as they can carry. As far as living players can see, their body glows for a little bit (to provide a chance to loot) then disappear, leaving all their extra stuff behind. Each time Players reiterate they incur 1d4+1 levels of exhaustion.
-
I'd want each dungeon and boss to be about the same difficulty, since what items players have are no longer restrictions to accessing most areas of the world. So I'd have to go through each dungeon and add new monsters, traps, and area effects. (Like Woodfall temple has a poisonous miasma that deals damage over time.) I'd also need to arrange so bosses have about the same CR, maybe around 10-15
-
Every mask will be a magic item with two effects, one standard effect and one effect that is only apparent when you've attuned to it. Except for the transformational masks. I want there to only be one version of unique masks/magic items available. So players couldn't amass a hoard. So whenever players reiterate with a magic item, it's version in the world is replaced with a mundane version of the same object.
-
Since there are so many side quests, I would want to be able to expand on them. My decision was to use the pawn shop in town. Each time you complete a side quest a new magic item is available for sale in that shop.
-
When I'm writing up each area, I'd have to include a table that shows how the place changes day by day as more people start fleeing the city for the outskirts and panic starts setting in.
-
I want to have other NPCs that are also trapped in the time loop and have been doing it longer. They've all come to the conclusion that fighting the loop is pointless and have reacted differently to groundhog daying their way through the world, where no one ever remembers, but they still remember. The first of these people is in the sacred realm and is using the fierce diety's mask to maintain the time warp.

This is really cool and detailed. Love the thought put into this. However, for the Zora, Goron, and Deku masks, you might want to consider adding a hard number of bonuses and negatives instead of saying "changing your stats to that of an X". Considering all stats are relative to how the PC rolled. So have the Goron mask grant a +2 (or maybe even a +4) to STR and CON, while the Zora mask gets a that bonus to DEX and......I am thinking CHA. Does that make sense?

Yeah, I see now that how it's set up makes more sense with these races as monsters/NPCs rather than playable races.
