Hello all! So I had an idea to create a pathway through a hedgerow that the players walk through, and as they're walking and talking to an NPC they will eventually realize they haven't reached the end. As they look behind them they can see the entrance, and in front of them they can see the exit in the distance, but no matter how much they walk they can't get any closer to the exit. The issue is that I can't think of how they'd eventually get out of it. Any ideas? Perception checks don't reveal any hidden paths or doors through the hedge, and if they hack away at the hedge they never really cause any damage.

the classic answer, which might mean don't go with it as they may figure it out too quickly, is that they need to walk backwards to get out. In typing that I am not sure if that is the classic answer, but is the one in my head that I think is classic, haha. You could have other ability checks that help, or spells that need to be cast. no matter how you go about it try and come up with something that every player can do, or has to do to get out that way it gives everyone a chance to shine. Or they could walk backwards, haha.

My immediate though was for them to keep moving forward or backward. As they do the hedge and the surrounding area begin to change seasons depending on how fast they move. They would feel the effects of the weather changes as well. The key to get out is to "travel" to the summer where a drought will cause the hedge to wither up and allow them to move sideways out of the row. Once they leave, the weather would change to what it was when they entered and the hedge grows back to its full glory.

The path could be a sort of weird loopy hamster wheel (not literally, but like...you know, magically) such that whatever direction the party walks in, the "wheel" rolls the opposite way to keep them in place. They could discover this easily by tying a ribbon to a branch and seeing it coming back around, no matter which way they walk. The only way to proceed (or escape) is for someone to walk in the opposite direction. They will not be able to pass through alone, or with everyone moving in the same direction. - Do you send the NPC back?
- Do you have a party member who can go back and then try to find a way around or over the hedge alone?
- Can one of them conjure or summon a creature or construct to walk in the other direction?
- Are they stuck in the hedge path until someone comes through going in the other direction, and who knows how long that will take.

That is an amazing idea! I am totally using a variation of this in some sort of temple. The test of sacrifice or something.

Wow, you guys are geniuses! I love all of those!
So initially my first thought was to go with the seasonal change, but I think since their first instinct will likely be to just run toward the end they won't really have to do anything to escape. I think I'm going with the walking backwards idea. If they walk backwards toward the entrance they'll have a forehead slapping moment that they need to walk toward the exit.
Maybe I'll even have the exit lead to a very tiny ledge over the ocean (that's where this path leads). If they don't think to check behind them as they step out they'll step into empty space and fall to the water below. Because the other players can't see past the end they won't know the person fell, they'll just hear them screaming and fading away. If they check behind them as they step backwards they'll see the thin path that can lead them safely down to the beach.
Thanks all!

That's amazing and I may try to work that in later! If it's a hallway in a building can they wedge a weapon inbetween the floor and wall, thus sacrificing a weapon to escape?
