So since my ranger is committed to being a duel-wielding sadist, I've abandoned the paranoid rapier idea. Instead, I'm going to present the player with the following:
Concerns:
Splinter: +1 Butterfly sword (use short sword mechanics)1d6 +1 piercing damage.
Shard: Same mechanics and description as Splinter, but mirrored in shape.
Splinter and Shard:
These enchanted weapons were created in the Underdark for the purpose of battling mind-flayers and intellect devourers. Shard has been lost, but a bold adventurer might be able to reunite the pair if they are willing to delve.
- Once per round, Splinter deals an extra 1d6 psychic damage on a successful hit. This is visually represented by blue flames darting out from the target's eyes, ears, and other orifices.
- Splinter cannot be drawn from its sheath by a creature under psychic enthrallment.
Shard: Same mechanics and description as Splinter, but mirrored in shape.
Splinter and Shard:
- When wielded at the same time by the same user, Splinter and Shard both function as +2 short swords.
- When both swords hit the same target on the same turn, roll an extra 2d6 psychic damage on top of each sword's psychic damage (4d6 total). This is accompanied by massive burst of blue flame from the target's orifices.

Concerns:
- 1d6 is the usual amount of additional damage a weapon does when it's enchanted, but a short sword only does 1d6 as it is. Should I tone this down? Quite a few things are immune to psychic damage so I might leave it.
- The player won't find the second sword for a while, so I want it to be a meaningful upgrade at a higher level. Is two +2 weapons for a say, level 10 player too much or too little?
- Is an extra 4d6 for a double hit too much? I have to admit, I have no idea how often they'll land double hits, so I don't know if this will get cheesed a lot.
- The player said that for this character, he loves the idea of burying both swords into something and having their head explode, which I've interpreted as scaling psychic damage. Should a double-hit also have a chance at causing the stun condition? It's logical, but maybe overpowered.
