So, I have just started DMing, actually the first session was this past friday and it went pretty well. I have a few main plot points in my world that I have built, and many scattered quests and minor things. But my party started on an Island and I have a quest there that I am trying to flesh out. I am actually trying to make this island a bit more on the side of spooky horror than on high fantasy, though the setting is typical fantasy.
I have a quest I am working on called The Merciless Wood. So it goes, that a few centuries prior, a coven of 12 witches were persecuted and hanged at the gallows on the edge of a forest. But in fact, only 11 were hanged, the other who is named Mercy Booth, was suspected to be the leader and also very powerful, and thus was beheaded and her body burned. I am quite thinking that perhaps someone stole her head away or it was buried elsewhere on the island, maybe on consecrated ground in a ruined church.
The hook for this, is that it was never actually Mercy Booth, it was her sister, Mary, that was actually the powerful witch. But Mary was no idiot and used spells to control and dull the mind of her sister, Mercy, in order to make it appear as though she were the powerful one. And thus, my party will(hopefully) investigate further when they pass by the Mercy Wood, which has grown dark and twisted with the vengeful spirits of the hanged members of the coven that dwell within. The animals will become grotesque, or mutated, almost sickly after spending a few centuries within the large forest.
I plan to have my party find an old letter signed by an M. Booth. The letter is going to describe how the writer, supposedly Mary Booth, is frightened of her sister and that she feels like her mind is withering away to nothing from the power her sister has over her. However, the letter will actually have been written by Mercy Booth. My problem is in figuring out how exactly my party will find clues or information on which M. Booth it is. I was thinking that the spirit of Mercy Booth would appear somewhere in the woods and they might(again, hopefully), not just attack and try to kill her(Bunch of murderhobos).
