I recently made a one shot to get some friends unfamiliar with dnd. And I can say it was a great success! We always nerd out about how to survive the zombie apocalypse. So, I finally asked them if they were interested in playing some dnd zombie apocalypse game. I started out by making them all first level commoners. And I made the setting in our home town. A very small town of like 800. So it was very easy to map it out. And the only weapons they had was what was in there house at the time. This was very interesting lol.... Some had to make firework bombs and others actually owned some guns. The hard thing for them to figure out was that zombies are very strong for first level commoners! So, I did go easy on them just because they were first time players. But they are still talking and thinking about what to do next, so I will have to give them a few more sessions. Which I am very excited about! I'm still thinking of a big bad boss for them to fight. Any ideas? I'm thinking I should end it at 5th level ish. This is also 5th edition rules.

So it sounds like it is a modern setting, and in that case I would suggest either the classic decked out S.W.A.T team. However if you plan on using those as more difficult zombies already, I for sure would introduce some Left 4 Dead style mutated zombies. Saving a Tank style zombie for the boss. For stats I would reskin one of the higher CR golems in the MM rather then use the flesh golem if you plan on getting them to 5th level.

You could make some minor and major goals, so minor = rescue the mayor, contact the outside the world major = rescue the school camping group, lead the zombies away from the town square
Don't forget marbles, caltrops, acid & nets, all cheap, non magical and effective against groups of stupid enemies.

I was thinking something like making goals. Because if faced with a big dumb zombie golem they would probably run away. I'm wanting them to come up with items to use on their own. But placing items in the houses to help them out may be a route to go. They also haven't had much time to be creative yet because they hit the ground running lol. I'll try and get them to some kind of safe haven by the next session. They ended the last session running into the woods where they ran into fewer but stronger undead. I was even thinking about dangling the death house module in front of them to see if they go in. Maybe to evil of me? Lol

Haha, that hosue is appropriately named, so it may be a little evil, but could still be a tons of fun to run. You can always have larger zombies blocking the way of something that the group needs. Tough zombie has the keys to something. There is a group blocking the entrance to where they want to go. However, if they are successful in circumventing an encounter I would allow it from time to time because that is a common, and understandable tactic especially if it's compared to a lot of zombie things in media. Great local safe havens = schools, as a lot of them, or at least where I live, have solar panels on their property. They also have a tendency to be fenced in completely to keep random people from walking onto a campus. As for a BBEG I think that LaserSniper has some great ideas for stating it out. Another could be a larger animal that has turned into a zombie depending on how you want that to work in your setting. I like the idea, and setting it in your town really helps the players have an idea of what is going on, and come up with cool places to go.

Love all of this! Still trying to get that group together for another session. But when I do I'll be ready! I defiantly want to make this a horror campaign because it's just to easy when your players are using commoners lol. So, I may give them a banshee or hag coven to deal with as well.

Maybe pull something from your town they're all familiar with to become the bbeg.
If you're all in school, the one teacher everyone dislikes. If your town has a statue or something similar, make it animated. A local politician, radio personality, mattress salesman with really cheap tv commercials, etc. Anything that would be recognizable to your players will really make them feel involved. There is a need for tact with something like this, you dont want anyone's feelings getting hurt by choosing something too close to home, but if done right this can really be a memorable encounter.
