Movies are great resources to pull plots/concepts from for adventures. Below is an example of how you can flesh out a plot and change it slightly to give
multiple session plots for your games.
= The Hobbit =
A group of Dwarves hire a Hobbit to help them steal the Arkhenstone from a Dwarven ruin which is guarded by a Dragon.
Along the way they must contend with Trolls (tough/stupid), Chased by Orks (Many/stupid),
Giant Spiders (stealthy/no magic), Corrupt Nobles (influence/has enemies).
Link to future events - Giant spiders & Orks work for Necromancer who will become ongoing foe.
- PC's find a ring that later the necromancer will send minions to retrieve. Queue-Lord of the Rings.
Ways to link to other adventures : Trolls are hired by nobles to raid caravans so nobles can increase taxes.
- Increase in giant spiders eaten many forest animals, nearby nations want all the spiders gone.
The Hobbit-Variant 1 : Keeping the theme/style but changing the nouns.
A group of wizards hire a ranger to help them steal the book of infinite spells from a elven ruin which is guarded by a Beholder.
Along the way they must contend with Ogres (tough/stupid), Chased by Bandits (Many/stupid),
Giant Centipedes (stealthy/no magic), Vampire (influence/has enemies).
Link to future events - Ogres & Bandits work for Vampire is an ongoing foe.
- PC's find a Holy Avenger that later the Vampire will send minions to retrieve to destroy.
Ways to link to other adventures - Beholder is seeking a mate, can give them the book once they make contact with other Beholder who runs a thieves guild.
- Vampire has a minion which is one of the pcs family, need to retrieve Gift of Life potion from sea caverns to restore person to life.
- if the wizards get the book, they start taking over towns and form a magocracy, enslaving some of the pcs family & friends.
The Hobbit-Variant 2 : Adding a monster theme.
A wealthy Hobbit hires a group of Dwarves to help them retrieve the Deck of Many things from a Ancient ruin which is guarded by a Demon.
Along the way they must contend with Dretch (many/stupid), Chased by a Devil Cult (3rd party rivals - many/weak),
Quasit (stealthy/weak), a Succubus (influence/has enemies).
Link to future events - All the demons work for Marilith who will become ongoing foe.
- pcs find a baby with deity powers that later the Marilith will send minions to retrieve to corrupt.
Ways to link to other adventures - Devil Cult are filling the vaccuum left by Demons being removed. Running protection racket/kidnappings.
- Druids need areas of the land cleansed from Abyssal/Infernal taint, plant blessed seeds around demon/devil infested area.
- the Hobbit paid with stolen money from tinker guild, they send their constructs after him and the pcs.
= Thor : Dark World =
- This one is more difficult because it's a sequel, but it can still be done!
Dark Elves sneak attack Asgard & Strange magical effects occur on Earth.
The Dark elves are after an ancient artifact and Thor and his friends try to stop them.
Thor and his friends must fight the Dark Elves attacks (not stealthy), and stop the planet conjunction that will allow the artifact to destroy the
universe.
Link to past events - Thor gets a girlfriend, Thor and his friends find ways to travel between locations.
Complication - Thor's girlfriend is kidnapped by the Dark Elves.
Ways to link to other adventures - planet conjunction caused wild magic randomly during the day, area needs to be cleansed with large ritual.
- merchant/tinker guild get some of the dark elven tech/magic and have become corrupted, more powerful but ruthless...
Dark World-Variant 1 : Keeping the theme/style but changing the nouns.
Sahuagin sneak attack Country 1 & Strange magical effects occur on Country 2.
Sahuagin are after an elemental artifact and PC's must try to stop them.
PC's must fight the Sahuagin attacks (not stealthy), and stop the magical ritual that will allow the artifact to sink the five nation area.
Link to past events - Family or friend contact required, PC's find ways to travel between locations.
Complication - PC's family/friend contact is kidnapped by the Sahuagin.
Ways to link to other adventures - Lizardfolk in the coastal swamps affected by sahuagin numbers, will aid vs Sahuagin in return for territory-reefs.
- artifact use activated two other artifacts buried in the area, magic is warping creatures, lots of aberrations/magical mutants occuring.
Dark World-Variant 2 : Adding a monster theme.
Grimlock sneak attack Country 1 & Strange magical effects occur on Country 2.
Mind Flayers are after an ancient artifact and the PC's have to stop them.
PC's must fight the Grimlock & Grell attacks (Grimlock-obvious, Grell-stealthy), and stop the ritual that will plunge the world into darkness.
Link to past events - Family or friend contact required, PC's find ways to travel between locations.
Complication - PC's family/friend contact is working for the Mind Flayers.
Ways to link to other adventures - duergar clan affected by magical affects, start raiding surface gnomes & underdark drow to gain assets.
- cult of darkness deity growing, sponsored by mind flayers, influence nobles, direct nation policy against other peaceful nations.
