So, as an experiment, I recorded last night's session. I wanted to see what I sound like at the table, and hear, from an outside perspective, how the game flows when I DM.
It was informative! I did a much better job on my descriptions that I thought I was doing, but a worse job at keeping a an encounter ticking along that I thought.
I highly recommend recording at least one session you DM. I just set up my iPhone on the table and let it grab the ambient noise using the built in voice memo app. Sound was pretty darn good; I could hear everyone just fine. Not at Godsfall level, but as good as many podcasts I've listened to.
(Here is where I refrain from ranting about how scary this level of recording quality is in the wake of the Snowden revelations regarding phone hacking by the NSA...)

We don't record our own sessions right now, but I have thought about doing this behind the screen just for my own sake. I think I might do it now. Thanks for the post about your experience. It has inspired me to do likewise.

Believe me, this recording will never see the light of day. For my ears only. There's a few moments where I make an especially offensive joke, remember I'm recording, and start cussing...most definitely NSFW and not kid friendly!

This is a great idea. I would agree with never letting it see the light of day even though mine would likely be SFW as I have a couple of younger players in one of my groups. I am hesitant to do it because I'm not the world's biggest fan of listening to myself, but it does sound like it can be very beneficial. Time to be inspired! How long was your session friartook?

The only time I am able to make work for gaming is late on weeknights. We meet Monday nights from 9ish to 12ish. Sometimes the sessions go later, and usually someone is late (usually me ), so we often only get a couple of hours per session. This is usually enough time to run 1 or 2 encounters depending on what's going on. Our current campaign is in a very linear, "encounter train" format right now. This session clocked in at 1:28. We waited for late comers before starting, and I'm feeling under the weather, so I called it early.

After thinking about it for a while, I've decided I would be fine sharing this recording. Its really not that offensive. More embarrassing really (in an, "Ugh, I really said that?" kind of way).
However, I am not comfortable posting it publicly. Too many eyes out there...and this was a private meeting of friends, so we all said/did things that don't need to be public.
If you'd like to hear what we do, please send me a PM and I will give you a link to the shared file on my Google Drive.
