Howdy fellow DMs!
So our group just finished the Rise of Tiamat. They failed to stop the ritual, and just Tiamat's heads emerging one at a time were enough to practically wipe them out. I had given them these super-potions that gave them the benefits of a full rest, but even that wasn't enough to save them. They were seven players and all level 12, but Tiamat's breath weapons were doing about 200 damage a round, and a new head emerged each round.
In desperation (and with some hints from me) they decided to save their skins and fling themselves through the portal and into hell.
I have a bit of a break now, another player is DMing a new game, and I need to plan the next stage of my campaign.
I was thinking instead just being in the Nine Hells and fighting devils and stuff, they would wake up in a from of "hell"... they are now in a version of the Sword Coast where Tiamat has laid waste to everything, half-dragons and dragonborn are rulers, life is miserable. I'm thinking along the lines of the world from the Midnight RPG. They let the whole world down, and stories about them are the stuff of legend, indicating a fair amount of time has passed.
I like the idea from the DMB world-building podcast where the god's porfolios have changed. One of the players is a Paladin of Sune, and I also have a cleric of Habbukak (from Dragonlance) in the party. I want to mess with them, their gods now have new portfolios like darkness and death, things like that. If they are physically in the Nine Hells, can their gods still grant them spells? Or would it be powerful devils playing with them? Will they still serve their god, or seek out more appropiate deities?
Anyway! Can you guys help throw a few ideas my way, creating a "hellish" version of the Sword Coast where Tiamat rules absolute, and it's all their fault... but they are actually wandering about in the Nine Hells somewhere under a delusion or spell...
Ultimately I want them to go up a few levels, figure out what's going on, and be able to somehow go back and stop Tiamat... either with some time-travel thing, or time moves slower here and only a few seconds have passed and they can still stop Tiamat.
Thanks!
