Alright, I've created this thread mostly because I told my main man Mainprize (see what I did there lol) that I would explain how I make maps that look old. now i have two methods for this, one using tea/coffee and one that uses paper bags. I am going to focus on the paper bag method because I feel that they turn out better. (if you want to know more about the tea/coffee method there are many tutorials on youtube that explain it very well) First step: Tear or cut a brown paper bag along its seams (I prefer to use the ones from the grocery store for their thickness) Second step: Take a piece of 8X11" piece of printer paper and trace it around a section of the paper bag (I use an exacto knife for this) Third step: Load the paper bag into your printer and print out the desired map (be careful with this step I have had to actually had to help feed the paper thru on some cheaper printers that I've owned, worst case scenario it jams and you have to start over and reprint, it also helps to actually lay a kitchen towel over the bag and iron it flat to get any wrinkles out before this step) Fourth step: Ball up the map several differant times until its nice and worn/wrinkled Last step: Take a lighter and begin to light the edges of the map letting it burn in about 1/8 to 1/4" around all of the edges. there you have it this is the easiest way i have to make a really good old and worn looking map you hand to your pc's, i also use this for scrolls and notes they may find so i can fold/roll them up and either seal them with wax or tie some ribbon around them. (you can find good sealing wax at any local stationary store) hope this can enhance you games

Interesting idea, using a paper bag. Would never have thought of that.
My plan is to draw the map by hand using charcoal and ink with a brush. I am going to try using watercolor paper, as it is made to soak up pigments and moisture. Then I am going to smear it with coffee grounds and/or used tea bags. After it dries, I'll do the crinkle thing to give it texture. Finally, I plan on burning the edges, and a section out of the middle. The idea is that this map is a rare, one of a kind item. It shows the environs around the lost city of the dwarves, but part of it is burned out and ruined. So the PCs have an idea of the surrounding terrain, and perhaps even part of the city map itself, but a good chunk of the map information is missing. I'm considering it an art object rather than a disposable prop, something I may frame after using it. I'll post a pic when its done.

Love it! the only problem i have had with the tea/coffee method is consistency of color but that may be the look you are going for so let me know how it turns out!
