Disclaimer:
If this concept already exists somewhere please let me know so I can figure out how to stat block this guy.
Nightmare Farmer:
A Nightmare Farmer (NF) instantly invades the dreams of creatures sleeping near it (determined by some radius), poisoning their dreams and giving them vivid nightmares. These nightmares should be personal to the character. Unearth shameful memories, expose their insecurities, realize their worst fears. Creatures affected by this cannot be awakened by any non-magical means by other creatures (you can't simply shake someone awake). At the start of each turn while under this effect, a creature may attempt a Wisdom saving throw in order to wake up. On a failure, the creature takes psychic damage and remains trapped in the nightmare.
The NF's physical form draws power proportional to each creature caught in its nightmare. It gains extra damage (only to physical damage. the nightmare damage stays static) and temporary hit points. The temporary hits points and damage become permanent to the NF only if the creature was killed by its nightmare damage.
Since most adventuring parties sleep in shifts, I'm envisioning one character who's on watch having to try to deal with this super-powered nightmare creature on their own. As the other party members wake up due to saving throws or the conscious party member's ingenuity, the NF will gradually become weaker and weaker until the power can overpower it easily.
Concept:
This creature is summoned (off camera) by the BBEG to hunt down the party, similar to the smoke baby from Game of Thrones. This creature, however, carries out its duty in an entirely different fashion. Designed mainly for flavor, this creature will get in each character's head and exploit their personal fears.
The entire purpose of this creature was for me to raise the personal stakes of the characters, remind them what's at stake by refreshing them on what their character cares about and must protect. It also enforces the theme of my campaign. When they stand together, the party is strong; giving into fear will make the party more vulnerable than ever.
Comments
Do you have any additional thoughts? Does it need any immunities or resistances or vulnerabilities? What type of creature should this be?
The party this monster is designed for will likely be around level 7-8 when this thing hits. Does this sound too strong? Ok, thanks!
