When you play forbidden desert for the first time. Pullout a phone or laptop and play this while playing the game. Takes it to a whole new level. youtu.be/OO7kW_-u2y0Good luck not dying of dehydration. Ha, thanks. I'll do it. I've played Forbidden Island a bunch, but not this one. Looking forward to it.

Ok, so before heading home from the christmas activities, a friend came over and he brought with him, Smallworld, a game I have wanted to try for some time but never had the chance to play. It was tons of fun and I strongly suggest getting it or giving it a try.
But what I really want to suggest it to get a copy and play a game of it, but record the major events of the game and use that to create a DnD setting. So for those who have never played Smallworld the game starts by each player picking a race or faction and then attempting to conquer as much land as possible to generate vp, one player goes and he selects dwarves and conquers 4 regions, then the next player goes and he picks amazons and conquers 6 regions, and the turns proceed until everyone has gone. Victory points are awarded and then it starts over, the dwarves continue to expand, but on the amazon players turn the dwarves lose half their land to the amazons, and he turns proceed until everyone has gone. At this point on "round 3" the dwarves arent strong enough to keep fight so the player who picked them decides to put them into "decline" he passes his turn and each other player goes. On his next turn he picks a new race or faction and begins taking over new land invading the halfling kingdom in the north and driving them down into the amazon. By the time the 10th round has past many races and faction have risen to great heights and fallen into the deeps of history and legend. The humans orcs and skeletons that exist at then end of the game represent the game world your players would play in. However there would be histories, and ruins, and relic and legend of the races that came before them. It just hit me while I was playing how very cool this board game is a tool for world building. So if you have it play it and keep that in mind as well as to always look for ways to be inspired. Keep on dungeon mastering!

Dominion is great! The only downside is it's possible to build a deck that can play through itself multiple times in one turn leaving everyone else bored and upset - it steamrolls a bit. This really only happens at the end of the game and requires certain card combinations to be out. I love the game.
Pandemic: Own it but haven't yet played it!
Imperial Assault: I"ve played the skirmish game with and it was fun. The default armies they gave us weren't balanced. My Darth Vadar wrecked shop and Luke couldn't stop me. We'll be playing again with point built armies. I can't wait to play campaign mode.
I'd say my tops right now are: Blood Rage (viking theme) Cosmic Encounters (space theme) Kemet (Egyptian theme) Five Tribes (Arabian theme) Mission: Red Planet (Mars) Libertalia (Pirate theme) Suburbia (Sim City theme!)
For 2 player games: Lost Cities Mr. Jack Battle Lines
I'm sure I forgot a ton, but check some out!
So far Co-op is down on my list. I'm not sure why I just can't get into those as much.

So far Co-op is down on my list. I'm not sure why I just can't get into those as much. It definitely requires the right group... My wife is completely indifferent to competition, so playing board games with her can get tedious/boring because she's not interested in winning. So, for us, co-op games work great; while she doesn't care about winning, she does very much want to help other players.

I think I'd actually like Pandemic, and Forbidden Island was great with my niece and nephew. I think many of my groups have competitive people that can be overbearing on the rest - so one or two of us end up making the most logical step by step decision for everyone.

In the matches of Dominion I played it seemed that the best tactic was to just rush for gold and forget the actions. I played 6 matches and focused on trying to use actions intelligently, my brother focused primarily on getting gold and buying provinces. He won all 6 games. So we tried a new strategy. We removed the gold cards from play. The next 4 games were amazing, actions of all values from moat to council room had a place and were used often. The game came down to smart choices instead of just hoarding gold.
Pandemic is a must play for co-op tables!!

Ok folks, had a chance over the weekend to play some games that I had purchased but hadnt gotten around to playing! Samurai Spirit - a co-op board game version of the film seven samurai. You and 3-7 players try to defend a small village from attacking bandits with your samurai prowess, you must choose when to defend, and when to attack and when to unleash your inner animal spirit! very fun! Entropy - a game of deception where each player is trapped in a nexus and trying to reform their own reality by acquiring shards. You play actions to collect cards from the nexus deck, but playing matching actions as other players causes temporal clashes. very fun. Backed via Kickstarter. Spaceteam - a co-op card game the goal of which is to repair your ships systems before the timer runs out and you slip into a blackhole. Very fun, very loud as you are screaming for tools and help from your friends, and made intensely stressful by playing the interstellar movie soundtrack while you play. Backed via kickstarter. As a special note, the game smashup which I have talked about a lot got a Munchkin fantasy themed expansion in late 2015. Its a lot of fun. The spring expansion for the game in 2016 plans as to have 4 new factions one of these is DRAGONS!!!!! I am super excited about this. Here is one of the preview images!!! Wyvern!

What do you mean when you say "reform their own reality"? Are you rebuilding a reality?

ya, so each player receives a character card, with that card they get 6 action cards that allow them to do things like draw to cards from the nexus deck and discard one. The nexus deck is a deck in the center of the play area that has 4 "fragment" cards for each player + 2 "wild fragment" cards. These cards when collected create a mural of your characters native world. So throughout the game which consists of multiple turns within multiple rounds. You are trying to collect and reveal all the fragments of your reality before someone else does. Let me know if that gives you the info you need or if you want more clarification

By that way I guess you could do the same with risk, only you do it with a specific great war in the timeline of your world

i've played a few versions of Talisman, there is a computer game version for solo and networked play too.
Munchkin is great, you can use items or spells to boost or hinder the other players, it's very PVP in a fun way, good way to wind down after a long campaign.
If you don't mind politically incorrect humour, try Cards Against Humanity, the reader gives a partial sentence, the players have a selection of cards and submit the best (worst) response. Never laughed so hard in my life!

Cards Against Humanity can be funny, but can also be very very obscene so if you choose to play it proceed with caution. Haha. Another game similar to it is called Super Fight. You draw character cards and upgrade cards and then reveal and debate who would win in the fight. An example would be Chuck Norris with laser canons for hands fighting batman who controls an army of raptors. The players at the table who didnt draw on this turn decide the winner. Its pretty fun.

I know I beat the Smash Up drum like its a dead horse, but I just got the newest expansion which contains 5 new factions. Those are Dragons, Greek Myths, Super Heroes, Sharks and Tornadoes. Its pretty awesome and AEG just announced the Fall expansion which will contain Star Wars, Star Trek, Game of Thrones and Transformers themed factions. This will put the total number of factions at 46. So excited!
