The group consisted of a paladin, cleric, druid, rogue and wizard, all level 4. They were already pretty spent, as far as resources go (HD's, spell slots, class features), but decided to press on for awhile longer. I had intended the party to take at least a short rest before the next encounter, but they passed the opportunity and forged on.
The party was crossing a large, felled tree that served as a bridge over a 30 foot deep, 20 food wide chasm with a river at the bottom. Halfway across, they were ambushed by a group of enemies, consisting of a druid (more a dark and savage shaman than a nature loving hippie), two berserkers and several archers.
The enemy druid won initiative and entangled half the party. The rogue and wizard evaded the entangle and fell back to the safe side of the chasm, then proceeded to use ranged attacks. The paladin and PC druid broke free of the entangle on the next round, and managed to get around the two berserkers holding the bridge on the enemy side of the chasm. The poor cleric was stuck on the bridge for a couple rounds, but everyone pretty much focused fire on the enemy druid, ending his life, and the Entangle with it.
However, one of the berserkers stepped onto the bridge and prevented the cleric from passing. This was bad, because the guys who made it across start getting hammered (multiple critical hits) by the archers and the other berserker. Both the paladin and druid's remaining healing resources were spent in short order. Briefly, people were going to die if the cleric couldn't get near the others. The cleric goes for a Shove attack to knock the berserker off the bridge, and succeeds! Almost...
The berserker succeeds on a dex saving throw to catch himself, and is hanging from the log bridge. The cleric cannot both try to knock the berserker off and aid his allies on his next turn, so he yells at the rogue and wizard to do something about it! It's worth noting that the party is so beaten up at this point, if the berserker rejoined the fight, someone was almost certain to die.
The wizard casts Tasha's Hideous Laughter on the berserker. Failed saving throw, and he plummets to the waters below howling with glee! Since he's still laughing when he submerges, he gets a lung full of water, which I call an insta-gib because 'rule of cool.' Plus the berserker was effectively out of play anyway, as the water was swiftly carrying him away. The cleric reaches his allies before the paladin has to make his (potentially last) death saving throw. They come together and win the day with 0 fatalities, while at about 1/3 resources, against a "deadly" rating encounter.
They took a long rest after that one.
