... *pop* ... There goes my brains. That is an amazing, mind boggling feat. I can't even imagine DMing this. My experience is limited and, though I love this game, you would probably have to pay me to do that.

That would be... interesting.
It's a big challenge on at least two levels. First comes learning every system, and not letting the rules become a hopeless jumble in your brain. Then comes creating the story arc that explains the mechanical changes from age to age.
I did this between 4e and 5e, and it was a pretty big effort. Doing this 4 times... My mind is less blown than it is recoiling in fear.

This would be amazing, and I would assume a couple things. First, it would be with the same players. Second, these are not being ran concurrently. I would be very hopeful that they would all tie together from a story perspective and definitely allowing for the player's actions in the previous ages affect the later ages. I don't know that there is an inherent need to explain the mechanical changes as I doubt the PCs would be the same between each age, but it would be a super cool thing to add in if it worked well for each jump. I hope he pulls it off and then tells us all about it!

I'd run it as historical; each edition is an age of the world. Each age is a new campaign. New PCs each age; descendants/followers are fair game. I wouldn't even explain the different mechanics. Mechanics are really just different ways to describe how things work. So magic works different in the new age, so what? Progress baby.
This, to me, would be an ideal place for the 2 players an a DM format. Keep the group tight and dedicated.
I may have to brush up on my THACO calcs...

Wow. This is nuts. But, I think it could work, if you ran each age almost like sequels of each other. This would give you some flexibility in how far you wanted to jump forward in time at each break. Want to use the same characters? Fine, write it in to the story.
The other idea is to do TOTALLY different ages. Sort of like we think of ancient Egypt, the Dynasty era in China, Vikings in Norway, the organized crime underworld of 1920s Chicago, and future sci-fi Star Trek era. Then you could do pretty much whatever you wanted... although keeping the same characters through all these would be a challenge without a time machine.
