I've read a lot of forum posts elsewhere from DMs misunderstanding or complaining about the XP budget encounter builder in the DMG and basic rules PDF. I'm fond of this alternative, a quick and easy way to create targeted difficulty challenges. My last group made it to 8th level before breaking up, so I'm not sure how well it holds up beyond that point. Player Level Charts

Going by the book, the process can be a bit taxing. My style was always on the fly, especially in 3E. If I wanted an encounter with a particular monster or group of them, I just winged it and fudged rolls where need be. Either hitting them when I rolled a miss, or vice versa to make it a challenging encounter. Often, I would drop a PC, but then fudge the rolls and allowed the others to get to him. Little things like that to keep the suspense going. It's no fun when you mow through 100 creatures without getting a scratch. Not all the time, anyways. I'll check that chart out and use it on my next game!
