So, about a month ago I made a post about all the ideas I had for possible campaigns. After doing a lot of thinking I may have finally decided on the type of campaign I want to run. Inspired by friartook's thread Going Full Rogue. So now onto the actual campaign Idea.
I really liked the idea of a full party of rogues forming a gang but after having it pointed out to me that in any heist movie or crime movie you look at the group is never composed of entirely rogues. So instead I decided to just allow players to choose as long as they plan ahead for stealth and such things and check with me so I can make sure their choice is not outside of the realm of my campaign. I am unsure what will bring their group together be it disgraced crime family, childhood friends, all being the same race in an area where they are outcasts because of it, do good criminals like robin hood, former members of the same organization(spies?), served in the same military squad, or even if they are just not good dudes. No matter which one it ends up I am likely to come to that conclusion by talking to my players when we do a character creation night.
I plan to let the players choose what parts of the gang to expand into, such as smuggling, drugs, theft, extortion, blackmail, and so on. But, no matter what I plan to have heists thrown in occasionally to spice things up(I have so many new ideas about this thanks to the heist episode).
Obviously this is all well and good but has a feel like it might end up being a bit of an episodic thing with no real goal other then expanding the gangs influence. However, I have had a few ideas that I really like and plan to work with to make things a bit more interesting.
The first one is probably my favorite. For know I am going to call it "Latent Abilities". This idea is essentially that all the members of the party are secretly holders of ancient magic which is through out my world hidden away until it is needed by those chosen by the gods(or something like that). I thought that they may not be able to control them and that I would use them mainly as story elements at first until they figure out what they are and perhaps find someone to teach them control(although some may be better then others is my concern). I've had a few ideas:
Teleportation- Can teleport short distances(no attack of opportunity) with my veto on things like teleporting into a vault etc.
Time Rewind- Like the time turner like idea mentioned in the heist episode- short time rewind
Minion- Summon a minion of some kind(perhaps a myr that would be helpful like a shield myr in combat, or a rope myr etc.)
Diamond Skin- Temporary boost to AC or possibly a very temporary immunity to attacks
Invisibility- Turn invisible for a turn of combat or slightly longer if not in combat
Other Ideas are welcome(preferably helpful in a stealth situation)
I would then put my players in an overwhelming situation such as a dragon breathing fire at them and then have it be like "As the fire reaches you you blink and find that you are now standing outside of the fires range" and "You see the dragon beginning to walk away but then he turns quickly a few seconds later and breaths fire at you, but now you seem to be having deja vu, the dragon is turning away again, do you move?" and "As the fire is about to reach you a small metallic orb appears five feet ahead of you and rapidly expands until a humanoid metal figure stands with a tower shield in hand" and "As the fire scorches your skin you feel no pain and look down to see that you have become translucent and seem to be made of what looks like glass" and "You vanish but get burned anyways" (more like the time rewinder saves you second time around by warning you). Then they would have to run a crime organization while perhaps being hunted down by enemies of latent powered people or trying to hunt for answers.
My other Idea was that the continent I always use for campaign settings has 4 nation(two human, one dwarf, and one elf). However, it turns out there are actually a large number of groups which belong to "unofficial nations" which are only whispered about or are just not considered nations.
Some examples are: A nation of criminals, an Ocean Nation, a tribal nation, a nomad nation(mirage nomads that use illusions to hide from outsiders in the desert), a nation of magicians, a nation of rebels against one of the other nations, a wild nation(made up of plant and animal folk, they are not known to exist any more on the continent), and perhaps a few others.
What I don't know is how to make this an overarching plot other then "you need to get the macguffin from each unofficial nation, but you will have to find them first."
My other idea was basically that the group might work for a man who runs a shop and after working there for years they finally realize that all of the customers are actually criminals and that the store is a front for the entrance to the black market. It'd be interesting I'm sure but I don't really think it has the large scale element that my other ideas have.
Well let me know what you think or if you have any ideas to add. I appreciate any and all help and suggestions. Also, if you have any questions I will do my best to answer them if I even know the answer yet.
