Hello guys! I’m brainstorming ideas for my potential campaign world and one of these ideas is that there was a plague years ago and the people in a certain area had to hold up in their city for many years and are only just beginning to re venture out into the world and much will have changed, wilderness taking over etc. abandoned towns and areas to explore.
What do you think I would need to consider to create a city like this? Can you think of any resources that could help? At the moment I am thinking attack on titan vibes with several walls for protection and farming village areas within these walls. I also thought I would need to consider where they would have gotten the stones from so maybe a nearby mountain range? Could a city be self sustaining for many years, would I need some kind of port town or trade during that time? What would you all suggest? Bad idea? Good idea??

I have to assume my answer is due to my love of dwarves, but my first thought was for the people of the town to dig down rather than building up or out. It allows for the town to continue its appearance as it were rather than to draw further attention by expanding.
With magic anything is possible! So a town could focus on expanding out its ability for low level magic by each person to sustain itself. Either through druidic magic like goodberry, purify food and water, etc. You could still have individuals that go outside of the wall to get things that the town itself couldn't produce.

So either you're facing some kind of transmutation magic to make useful things out of the gangue (waste rock that is not ore), or it could be utilized to strengthen the defenses. The walls might actually be twice as thick as they were when everything started, or a little bit taller? Ooh, and take a look at the Theodosian Walls of Constantinople!
