As one of the more popular of the episodes ( 209: Magic No More) we have released I had to pick it to make an exercise from. Magic is ever present in some worlds, non-existent in others, and everywhere else in between. This exercise is to help us turn magic on its head, and ask questions of our worlds. Not quite as many questions, but certainly some interesting ones. 1. Was there ever magic in the world? 2. Why wasn’t there magic, or why is it gone now? 3. Can magic come back to the world? 4. How would classes be reskinned, or would they be removed altogether? 5. You do you! Let’s lift the mental weights!

1. Was there ever magic in the world? In the beginning there was chaos; the chaos was creation, the chaos was destruction, the chaos was magic. From the chaos came all things and all held the magical spark of chaos.
Some things were less chaotic then most, they had less magic but more reason and they feared the chaos. Those whose reason had become fear came together to create a space free of the chaos, forming a small bubble of order in the vastness of chaos.
2. Why wasn’t there magic, or why is it gone now? Those who lived shorter grew more “orderly” with each generation. They slowly lost their magic, but quickly learned control. Soon the lesser beasts were tamed and the greater purged to end their “chaotic taint”. The “gods” took the best of the world and cultivated them and tamed or purged the less worthy. Finally the great “God” tamed or purged the other gods who, it is said, “stubbornly clung to their chaotic ancestry in secret”.
Finally, all was order and chaos had been cleansed from the world. Except, didn’t the great God wield magical powers? Was not all magic from chaos? The fear of chaos reigned and so the masses of Order marched upon the last bastion of chaos and purged it from their perfect world, and magic was no more.
3. Can magic come back to the world? It is said that the only way to maintain the barrier between order and chaos is by maintaining the purity of Order.
That was all long ago and most now disbelieve the tails of chaos and the barrier, though rumors of chaos and its agents still makes most shake in fear at least a little. It is accepted that extremist sects of Order exist to stamp out any strands of chaos that might pop up from time to time.
4. How would classes be reskinned, or would they be removed altogether? Clerics and Paladins would not have magic, but would have a resistance to it based upon their “faith” in Order and would mostly be mage hunters. Sorcerers, Rogues, Bards, and Warlocks (seen as servants of chaos) would be few and far between and have to keep their abilities secret. Wizards and Druids would be seen as cultists even more than warlocks and be heavily persecuted. Fighters and Monks would be common and encouraged; while Rangers and Barbarians, though socially frowned upon, are still “okay”.
5. You do you! A bit too real ... Hmmm...

1. Was there ever magic in the world?
Long ago, magic lifted our world to unimaginable heights - hundreds of millions living in peace and luxury amidst powerful sorcery, under the auspices of a benevolent pantheon.
2. Why wasn’t there magic, or why is it gone now?
Over the course of three chaotic days, the Gods and Goddesses of our holy pantheon fell asleep - and the power that once flowed from them vanished from our world. Cities fell from the skies as temples crowded with panicked worshippers. In the millennia that followed, the world fell prey to much more mundane horrors and the times of magic faded to myth.
3. Can magic come back to the world?
The sleeping gods are legends - but legends live on, can even change and grow. In these troubled times strange rumors abound. What do we make of this upswell of strange (even magical?) portents and signs?
4. How would classes be reskinned, or would they be removed altogether?
Tiny trickles of ancient power still reside in a vanishingly rare segment of the population. These people may be shunned or celebrated, however their abilities set them on paths that frequently intersect.
Mechanically, magic-based classes would be capped out at some predetermined level - not just for the players, but for every NPC caster in the world.
What happens when the party awakens some tiny fragment of the goddess of Magic, and every wizard everywhere suddenly gets level 3 spells?
5. You do you!
Far in the southern plains, the cattle herder, bandit and local folk hero known as Seku has started having strange dreams. There is a massive woman made of stone, holding a knife and scales. She is sleeping under the hills... and dreaming of a man named Seku.
