So I need my players to go to an elven city to stop the king from conducting a ceremony that has the potential to destroy life as they know it, but it do not want to railroad them to get there.
What are some rumors or story hooks that the party can hear from the local Temple, Tavern, shop keeper or random npc on the street?
Thanks for your help in advance...
(So some context of the story so far; the players started as lvl 0 commoners in a village that they grew up in and only heard of dwarves and elves but never met them. A new Baron visited the village and threw a party for all. The next thing the PC's know is that they are in a slave caravan heading who knows where and they have no idea how long they were out. The caravan was attacked during the journey and the wagon lost control and off they went over a cliff. They woke up at the bottom, still in chains but no longer in the wagon as it had been destroyed in the fall.
They met a few NPC's the next day that told them that the area they are in now is over 3 weeks from their hometown.
They met up with a dwarf that ran a mobile pub and grub and he told them about a city to the east where they may have some luck at a guild. They also were ambushed by a few elven mercenaries and were able to fend them off. As of now, they have only been exposed to humans, dwarves and a few elves.
None of the goblinoid races exist, yet. The above ceremony has the potential to create all the goblinoid races. The elven king is named King Orcanthalas, he has been at war with the dwarves and humans for centuries and is on the brink of being wiped out. The ceremony is his last effort to turn the tide of the war in his mind. There is also a Gnome leader that lives in the city, his name is Lynseknob Gobloresh and they also have a small community of Halflings who's elder is Kobin Oldresh. There is also a large contingency of elves from another kingdom, a warband of Moon elves led by led by General Lynis Hobbgarden.
So, if the ceremony is successful there is the possibility of Orcs, Goblins, Kobolds and Hobgoblins coming into existence.
The one piece of this that the PC's are still unaware of is that one of the Gods in my world brought them back to this time period, which is about 300 years before their existence, to hopefully stop the ceremony from being successful.)
