So something that was said in a recent episode (I want to say it was the player's block) got me thinking- what if you played as a Golem Master? Structurally, I figured that the golem's rounds would be similar to a barbarian's rage, while the player is something of a glass cannon. Crafting: Armorsmithing would be a requirement, so maybe the player could armor up so that they don't get insta-killed. Anyone who has played Borderlands 2 and had access to the mechro-mancer... That's kinda what I'm picturing.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I'm going to play around with this and I'll post some class progression when I have some more thought out.

You could take a look at the artificer from the 3.5 Eberron campaign setting for inspiration. They could craft golems at higher levels. At first level they could only make a homonculous, but it got better from there.
There was an unearthed arcana article with an artificer wizard school for 5e, but as a fan of artificers, I found it very unsatisfying.
Please post a rough class outline if you're willing to share it. I'd be interested to see what you've come up with and would be happy to provide feedback if you like.

I thought about this for a npc that would become a big bad later on I made his golem small to start a dog it had as many hit die as The golem master he was sluggish could ether move or attack in a single round had a high armor class but only deal 1d6 points of damage this improved as the master gain more lvls at lvl 4 the golem improved getting a size category bigger and becoming quicker now able to move and attack also his attacks count as a magic weapon at lvl 6 the master could choose to once again rebuild the golem into a humanoid form the golem gaining another attack per round plus crushing if both attacks hit there target the master was slowly replacing his own body parts with constructed versions becoming a construct that will live on threw the ages as a golem masters final goal Lvl 2 the golem master has replaced a few fingers treat them as a magical item that can store 1 lvl worth of spells lvl 3 the golem master has replaced one of his eyes he gains 30 ft of night vision Lvl 5 the golem master has replaced his entire hand gain +2 dex and can store 3 lvls worth of spells in your fingers take a -1 to cha lvl 7 the golem master has replaced his whole arm gain +2 to str and -1 to cha I forgot to mention that I created this as a sorcerer type class that I'd cha based so the more construct he became the weaker a spell caster he becomes but that's as far as I got I think we stopped playing when he was lvl 7

Level 20 and the NPC is running around in a huge mecha-like Golem, like some form of Gundam?

Not quite he's actually replacing his body parts it's more like a arcane cyborg so at lvl 20 he's literally a golem with free will and spell casting abilities though I never really got that far with it as a class

Would there have to be some form of him left of his original body (like brain or heart), the basic concept reminds be of a character from Naruto ( Sasori) who turned him self into a puppet so that he would never age or could never fall sick, but he had to have 'Core of Living flesh' which was the source of his power.

Or the Mechanicum from Warhammer, in a sense you could even have this concept as a race. A group of strong magicians who slowly replaced their body with that of a golem, until they had a country of primarily golems and half-golems.

I like that idea of having them as a race in the world he was in what he was doing was looked at like necromancy it was a forbidden art and he had to hide his body he was using copper and gold wit a minor focus on lightning spells
