The Oobelex is a pretty nasty ooze that I've been brewing up lately.
I've been trying to think up of monsters and encounters that have video game 'raid' like mechanics. I spent a lot of time playing the Destiny 1 raids and loved the team based mechanics they used.
This monster is inspired by the non-Newtonian fluid called Ooblek! It's a liquid which hardens the more force is applied, but quickly turns back into a liquid. I want this monster to be protecting something valuable that is contained inside of it at its core.
The ability that this ooze will have is something that follows:
Damage Absorption (?):
The Oobelex is immune to any damage suffered by the first attack each turn. If multiple attack actions are used against the Oobelex in the same turn, the Oobelex is stunned until the beginning of it's next turn. It can only take the Psychic Reflection reaction and it loses all damage immunities during this time.
My thought is that it will force players to think outside the box to deal damage, using their reactions offensively, or forcing action surges to be used, or powering up a magic missile to have multiple blasts.
I know it's common DM philosophy not to write in outs for your players, but this is also a known way for the creators to get back the artifact that is hidden inside.
The psychic reflection is kind of my "Gotcha" moment when a bard or wizard decides to try and get around the physical immunity, like when their fighter can't damage it alone, and their fireball dealt no damage.
Psychic Reflection:
Reaction - If the Oobelex is damaged with psychic damage, it takes no damage instead and the attacker is dealt half of the damage inflicted.
I'll probably use the stats of a Black Pudding, but remove Amorphous if the object it's protecting is larger than 1", and also remove Split. I've mulled around the idea of it going down a size if below half of its starting life, and then down another size if below a quarter, with the ability to use it's action to re-absorb broken off parts of itself, but that might just be overkill.
What do you all think of this monster?
What artifact is it protecting? (I was thinking Dwarvish in nature as I've had Dwarves use captured oozes as traps in the past)
What else do you think? (You do You!)

P.S. I apologize for grammatical errors, just coming off of a night shift.
