Hello.
So our bard does not currently have a instrument and I thought to myself (her being a pretty big LoZ fan) that it would probably be awesome to make a magical artifacty instrument based on the Ocarina.
After attunement I was thinking of increasing her amount of Bardic Inspiration die by 1. But after that I am kinda unsure of what to do. One idea was to have the instrument linked to a deity who placed the instruments on the land along with scriptures, or note sheets if you will, where each time you play a melody from the scripture in a certain place the instrument gets upgraded (think 3.5 artifact levels)
What would be appropriate and not too overpowered to add to it?

With each upgrade discovery, it could gain a daily spell power. For instance, the next upgrade may allow her to cast a free Healing Word or Sleep 1/day. At higher levels, it can gain higher level spells. The DMG has a small list of magical instruments under Instrument of the Bards, in the magic items section.
It can grant a spell attack bonus, possibly increasing at higher level discoveries. See Wand of the Warmage, Rod of the Pact Keeper, various staffs. I personally wouldn't ever go above +1, but +2 is appropriate enough for level 10-17, +3 for 17+
Sometimes fluffy effects are player favorites. Terrain permitting, songbirds could approach and chirp along, or tiny motes of light might flicker into existence around her while she plays it.

I like the idea of giving an additional Bardic Inspiration because of the item. Per long rest spells as per Nevvur, is another great idea that could be tailored to the god that has placed the item on the world, if you are still going with that idea. The other idea I was thinking would be to give advantage on certain rolls, or to give players actual Inspiration.
It depends on how much focus you want to put on this item, but handing out purely mechanical pluses as it is upgraded is both risky and not too fun. I think that adding fluffy things as Nevvur has stated could help to continually give small additions without overpowering the item. To add to cool fluffy ideas it could have wild life grow at the bard's feet when played, or draw both fauna and flora to it during play, Again I think linking it to a deity of some kind would really help to fluff out the item in a ton of ways.
Awesome idea, and one I'm sure the player will love!

Yeah, additional Bardic Inspiration is another good low-mid level bonus that won't break the game. Good idea, joat
edit: just re-read the original post and realized you were already planning on this. Oops. Good idea, Froh!

The other idea I was thinking would be to give advantage on certain rolls, or to give players actual Inspiration. you mean like rod of the pact keeper? aka pluses to your bardic spell attack rolls and the saving throws. plus regain a spell slot 1/long rest. add a small table of random effects of what happens when you use it. Like 1d8: 1: Sparkles of faerie light is emitted from the ocarina as you play your song. 2: The surrounding greenery takes on a healthier tone and simply looks content (added affect of slightly purifying corrupted / unholied ground) 3: something something bright side of life. Perhaps have it enhanced in slight ways when the bard is leveling up dependant on her actions. but I think what I have right now will be fine. Aka the +1 bardic inspiration die and the random happenstance table

I think that the item could work like the Rod of the Pact Kepper, but that would have to be instead of the additional Bardic Inspiration dice. Also, I was thinking that rather than another use of Bardic Inspiration that the instrument could give a player a point of Inspiration per the main mechanic and have advantage on a roll later, or maybe this could be added later as the item is leveled up. I am a sucker for random tables and LOVE the idea of rolling a d8 to see the additional fluff effect that happens. I also agree that it is a great item and I can't imagine a bard who wouldn't love it.

I'm not sure about giving inspiration, as I feel that should depend on how the players act their characters out. And perhaps in the future it gains charges that can be used to use a set list of spells, much like the instruments of the bard. But since the thread name is magical instruments, how about adding more instruments with lesser enchants. like a lute that literally brightens up the room.

You don’t have to have an ocarina you can have a pan flute, it can still be canonic to LoZ, but if you do make a special ocarina try adding a slow time affect when casting musical spells.
