so a player of mine chose to be a rouge I'm pretty sure once she gets to lvl 3 she will choose beast master, heres the thing i want to give her something fun, of couse i want it to fit the peramiters so (beast 1/4 cr or lower and no bigger then mediam) but my idea is because of the characters background i would love to give her something water based the problem is has to breath air and the only option i can find is a giant crab which could be fun but i was thinking something homebrew might be better for this campain.

The question is, what do you want in the homebrew creature that works better for the campaign than the giant crab (like actually CR 1/4).
Looking at a Komodo Dragon, they swim very well and could end up being CR 1/4.
Komodo Dragon Medium beast, unaligned Armor Class 12 (natural armor) Hit Points 13 (2d10 + 2) Speed 30 ft., swim 30 ft.
STR DEX CON INT WIS CHA
14 (+2) 10 (+0) 13 (+1) 2 (-4) 8 (-1) 5 (-3)
Senses passive Perception 9 Languages - Challenge 1/4 (50 XP)
Hold Breath. The Komodo Dragon can hold its breath for 15 minutes.
Actions Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw or take 3 (1d6) poison damage. If the poison damage reduces the target to 0 hit pooints, the target is stable but poisoned for 1 hour, even after regaining hit points, and is paralyzed while poisoned in this way.

Maybe a Giant Otter would fit your feel better?

well the campaign is set in a new island that was recently discoved by the races so having something not found in the normal areas would be best but she said her charecter liked fluffy stuff and petting a crab isnt that nice i think it would be cool but im not sure it would be her cup of tea. (deffinatly going to put komodos in the world now though)

Basing it on the Giant Weasel. Bumped up a little for the higher challenge rating, but you could also just use the weasel straight with a swim speed. Giant OtterMedium beast, unaligned Armor Class 13 (natural armor) Hit Points 11 (2d8 + 2) Speed 30 ft., swim 30 ft. STR DEX CON INT WIS CHA 11 (+0) 18 (+4) 13 (+1) 4 (-3) 12 (+1) 5 (-3)
Skills Perception +3, Stealth +3 Senses passive Perception 14 Languages - Challenge 1/4 (50 XP) Hold Breath. The Giant Otter can hold its breath for 15 minutes. Actions Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 6 (1d4 + 4) piercing damage.

I noticed you took out the keen hearing and smell, is that to make it different? im thinking im going to make it normal not giant and use the basic weasel but i was thinking of having it be a rare type a "blue otter" and maybe giving it a trait like "gets advantage on stealth while in water" that way i can put in tasks where she will have it get a ring that fell in a well or something like that, the down side it will be weaker then if it was giant but im hoping she would have more fun with a tinny beast then a medium beast, i guess i will just have to have her come across a small otter and a big otter before she gets to lvl 3 and judge her reaction.

I just considered the keen hearing and smell more of a weasel flavored thing than an otter thing. She could ride a big one.
The way Beast Master works, a small creature gets a huge health boost (minimum of 12 hp), which helps make things like a CR 0 weasel more viable, but you may want to give it more damage, maybe a (1d4+3) on the bite. That should make it pretty balanced. In fact, since the hit points are the main difference, it will be just like a giant weasel if you change the attack damage and nothing else on the weasel.
Edit: Also a large strength difference, but that will only come into play with saving throws.

A capybara! A Caiman (which would be less OP than a croc or gator)! A blue heron, flamingo, or other large aquatic bird! A snapping turtle! A chocolate labrador (they are too semiaquatic, shut up)!
You wanna *really* homebrew something? A land octopus. A dolphin with legs! An actual flying fish!
