So as well as being a DM I also play a decent amount of board games. I figured I would share the list of games I own will tiny reviews so that if you are interested in expanding your tabletop nerd-dom you would have a place to start.
SmashUp + Expansions Rating 6/5
SmashUp is a shuffle building card game where players combine 2 armies to create a mega army, which they then use to claim Victory Points at various Base Location across the Table. Example of armies would be Ninjas, Pirates, Robots, Wizards, Tricksters, Aliens, Zombies, Dinosaurs w/Laser Canons. So a combined army could be alien ninjas, or wizards riding dinos whilst shooting laser cannons. This game is amazing and I play it every week multiple times there are currently 4 expansion with 4 new factions each, Cthulhu Expansion, Awesome Level 9000 Expansion, Mad Monsters Expansion, and Science Fiction Double Feature Expansion. Seriously pick this game up.
Zombies!!!! Rating 4/5
Zombies is a exploration map building game where players explore a city, search for health items and munitions and then make a mad dash for the helicopter once it arrives. This game can be played co-op or versus, and has 2 winning condition. It is fun and dynamic and the map changes with each play through. It comes with about 4 player miniature(dudes holding shotguns), and about 60 Zombie miniatures(great if you play a D&D campaign that needs zombies).
Dungeon Dice Rating 3/5
This simple dice rolling game has player alternate turns exploring a dungeon, grabbing loot, and retiring to a cavern. Very easy, very fast and can be played solo if desired. It also comes with like 6d6 which have various icons on them as well as a d10 that has number save for the 10 spot which has a dragon head. An easy fast game for intermission during long D&D session or possibly a game that could be part of your world.
Munchkin Rating 4/5
Munchkin is a game about delving into dungeons, killing everything you meet, stealing tons of loot, and stabbing your friends in the back! Each players is trying to get to level 10 by exploring dungeon rooms and gaining items, gold, and abilities. It has a fun light-hearted theme which pokes fun at and plays with a lot of the tropes of RPG games. Pick it up give it a try, you can easily take some of the item cards and tweak them to be used in a D&D setting.
Pit Rating 5/5
Pit is a game about the stock exchange, players are handed resources and trade those resources in an attempt to corner the market on a specific good. The game is fast-paced, loud, frantic and exciting. A must play for people who are competitive. It has been a staple of the Mainprize home since I was a kid.
Bananagrams Rating 3/5
B-grams is a freeform versus version of scrabble where player try and spell words quickly using the letters they own then draw from a communal pool to gain more letters in a attempt to drain that pool, and use every letter of their own the fastest to win the game. If you like word games or love scrabble but want something faster and more intense grab bananagrams.
Settlers of Catan 4/5
This resource/income management game is a classic, you build cities that harvest goods, then connect your city with road all while trading goods and trying to keep other players from gaining victory points. Buy it, play it, you wont regret it.
Star-farers of Catan 3/5
Similar to Settlers but more complex, Star-farers has players establishing colonies in deep space while trying to negotiate with various aliens to acquire bonuses and goods. Good for the fan of Scifi, the biggest draw back is that the game is very expensive, around $300. I lucked out and got mine from a consignment shop for around $15.
Blokus 5/5
Blokus is a game about space and tile management, the goal is to play as many of your own game pieces onto the board while blocking other players from doing the same. Imagine Tetris combined with Chess and you can have some idea of how blockus works. Very fun for people good at math and spacial awareness.
Forbidden Desert 5/5
In forbidden desert each player is member of the same team of explorers and your helicopter has crashed in the forbidden desert. Your goal is to find the ancient flying machine, find the parts for said machine and escape the desert before the elements over take you. Each explorer has various abilities to help the group survive and the desert has about 3 different ways to kill you. This game takes skill, strategy and no small amount of luck. It is best played while listening to the Soundtrack from Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception. This is probably my second favorite game after smashup.
Lagoon: Land of Druids 4/5
Lagoon LoD is a game about shaping the world in its earliest days. you play as a group of druid and you try to help create the world and align with one of the 3 cosmic energies. This game is complex and not for the amateur. It has a lot to it both in strategy and in actions players can take on their turns. The artwork for this game is stunningly gorgeous and it comes with various druid tokens that could be adopted into your assets to use in D&D. Check it out.
Bakong 4/5
Bakong is a game about delving into a dangerous jungle, reaching an old temple and stealing the emeralds therein. It can be as quick or long as you want because you control how large the map is. It gives each player a rucksack with limited space and items to help them on their journey. This game is simple and fun. Great for fans of adventure/archeology tropes like Indiana Jones, Lara Croft, Uncharted etc. When we play each person at the table picks a fiction adventure to play as!
So those are the games I own, I didnt include traditional stuff(risk, monopoly, decks of cards, dominos). So check those out and get your game on. I will probably update this thread from time to time as I am always acquiring new games.
Until then thanks for reading.
