My solo campaign player REALLY wants to go into the underdark but he's only level 2 and would die horribly. I can only have him fight 'injured' or 'weakened by disease' strong monsters so many times so I'm looking for low level monster ideas. (he's only going to be passing through a relatively surface region of the underdark to escape from a mine). Do you have any favourites?
I've also considered having him come upon a group that is already fighting a slightly stronger monster (or two monster groups in conflict) so that he has temporary allies. It could be a useful plothook in future for him to have a connection with a friendlier underdark individual or community.

The idea you have there is great. Assisting those in their time of need against a stronger monster. The key, in my opinion, would be to make sure that it feels like the Underdark, a foreign and crazy place, more than it fights like the Underdark if that makes sense. So, the encounter that comes to my mind would be to have them stumble their way into a place where myconid are, and maybe they have an encounter, and maybe it is a fight or maybe they manage to negotiate with them. You could describe all manner of growth and lichen and fungus, and the bodies of various intimidating creatures that have wounds from this or that even scarier thing. So yeah, hopefully that is helpful.

The other fun thing about two groups battling it out is he has to pick a side. If they seem evenly matched and he's tipping the odds, then it will determine which group he has favor with in the future (and animosity from as well if the other group retreats).
I would also consider looking at underdark beasties that are usually in swarms and throwing one or two at him that have been broken off the swarm.
Since he's alone, the experience will depend a lot on his class and maybe even race (What vision does he have available to him?). A rogue could sneak around many problems, but a wizard will be in trouble against anything that has a chance to get to melee range. This can be mitigated if he has the means and the contacts to hire some help.
