So, just finished listening to this episode. First, fantastic. SO much great info, ideas, & inspiration.
Does anyone have the 5 categories for the 3x5 exercise? I don't know that I could go back right now and sift through the 2.5 hours to find it, but I want to give it to some players soon.
Thanks!

List three things related to each of the 5 topics from the character's past:
1) Locations: could be where he grew up, where he got his class training, etc. 2) Events: important events that formed his personality 3) Allies: family, friends, patrons, etc. 4) Rivals: people the character is competing against, or who don't want him to succeed. Not necessarily enemies. 5) Enemies: people the character is hostile toward, or who are hostile toward him. The character might not even know someone is an enemy.

It's important to remember that these don't have, and shouldn't have, big stories attached to them. Locations can be anything the character has run into that stuck in their memory, not necessarily directly focused on them. The home he grew up in? Sure. But how about, when he was a child he stumbled on a clearing surrounded by huge standing stones. He was only 6, so it couldn't be far from his house, yet he has never been able to find it again. Even more interesting, have the PC not be a nature-related class. Leave the rest to the DM to fold in. Everything should be one or two short sentences max. This allows a lot of room for the DM to work, and reduces your expectations about what may happen.

Thanks so much, guys. I'm finally getting a group together and am going to DM for the first time, so when we do our Character Creation night (thanks to this podcast) I'm going to give this a shot. I'm fairly experienced at doing improv, and one of the most important things I've learned there is to lean into your prompts. I'm hoping that having these bits will help me craft the story.

Whipstache! Super Excited for you! Let us know how everything goes!!! For sure. I'll probably send an email for the mailbag of holding. It won't be for at least another month... a friend of mine from grad school is moving to the area and wants to get a game going, so it'll take a bit for him to get settled. But, I'm definitely starting to get ready now.

And pretty soon, after not playing for a while the shakes will begin. and after that you cant even play yahtzee without envisioning a rogue's sneak attack.

First off, Great Podcast!
I've ran into quite a few players (table top and larp) who just want to tell their own story, no interest in cooperating with others. So it was nice to hear you guys go into how players can enhance their own fun AND enhance the fun of the group.
Re Barbarian/Wizard - One of my players made a Barbarian, who thought he was a wizard. He carried books, wore a robe and no armour. When he used his mace he would yell Magic Missile! it was fun, but unfortunately the game didn't last long due to work commitments.
Re Support characters - remember the tv show Buffy? Buffy had strength, Willow had magic, Giles had brains. but Xander was the hero. Why? because he was a regular guy. He had commitment and dedication and that's it. One episode Buffy pointed out that this normal guy has done more patrols and staked more vampires than most people have had hot breakfasts.
