Well, nobody else was starting a thread...and I HAVE THOUGHTS!
The idea y'all had for "showing it's a game": I honestly never even thought about that! But its such a great idea! The angle I would go for: Breaking In the Newb.
Adam's cousin Bob has come to stay for the month of July, while his parents enjoy a holiday in Cancun. Bob is pissed. He's from L.A.; too cool for this quiet midwestern town. There's nothing to do, and his cousin Adam is such a dweeb!
But Adam doesn't get it. He's so socially awkward that he doesn't even understand how cool his cousin is (wink wink) and invites Bob to join in his weekly D&D game! Bob is so not into it. But...there's just nothing else to do. So Bob joins Adam and his friends Clara, Dave and Edith on Sunday afternoon to play, "Ugh!" this incredibly nerdy game (in my mind this all takes place in 1989, but it could be any time).
Adam rolls up a fighter for Bob (the simplest class to play), and sets the scene...ROLL THE DRAMATIC MOVIE!
All the in character scenes show Bob's character being a bored, unenthusiastic participant in all the high drama and comedy of a D&D adventure. Occasional cutaways for "table talk" happen here and there. And slowly, over the course of the film, Bob starts to become engrossed in the game narrative despite himself.
The climax: Everyone else foolishly tries to fight the Dragon (duh, has to be a dragon), but Bob had his character run away ("This is stupid, you're all gonna die!"). So, the TPK is imminent, everyone is gonna die! The Dragon and BBEG are gonna win!
Then SLAM! Bob stands up and bangs his fist on the table, shouting, "NO! NOT TODAY!" His character runs in and saves the whole party. They don't win, but they all live to fight another day.
After the triumphant climax, things peter out. We have a scene of Bob going home...back to L.A. and his "cool" friends and distant parents and rich house...but he seems sad about it, not happy. Adam gives him a hug, thanks him for all the fun game sessions, and expresses hope Bob will keep playing back home. Bob give a desultory, sarcastic "Yeah, sure man."
Then, Bob on the plane, bored, looking out the window. He reaches into his bag and finds...Adam's beat to hell copy of The Dungeon Master's Guide. Inside, an inscription, "Bob, here's hoping you have many more adventures in store! Love, Adam" Bob's eyes, brimming with tears, light up. He looks out the window, and smiles as the scene dissolves into his fighter character riding a dragon through the same clouds he sees outside his airplane window, dramatic music and credits.
Now, I'd watch the **** outta that movie!
Edit: I just realized I made all the characters male. A small thing perhaps, but edited to fix.
