I seem to be a bit stumped on a subject. My players are going to be following clues a Vampire Lord has heft them. Eventually they end up in an abandoned (slaughtered) Drow city. The Vampire Lord has made his new home alone these ruins.
The part that gives me a moment for pause is this, I don't recall a scenerio like this occurring before. What would persuade a Vampire Lord to go underground, besides being pursued by players and the promise of no sun?

1-its out of the sunlight 2-less people around to hassle you, when you live forever you can take up really long hobbies like learning necromancy, questing for artifacts or editing actual play podcasts 3-maybe it was a drow, and fed on more and more of the city until there was no one left, after feeding on bugs and stuff it got bored so laid some clues down to entice some more interesting prey down here to play with 4-maybe it longs for final death but doesn't have the guts to do it to itself 5-maybe it needs good heroes to unlock an evil tomb, something important like say vecna, the tarrasque or even tharizdun 6-maybe its being hunted by mind flayer necromancers (living and undead thralls oh boy oh boy) who want to learn its secrets 7-maybe its the first vampire, and wants to hire people to find its children

I really like your #6. Most of the ideas are intriguing, but #6 can easily tie into the story I've been working on. Thank you!
