This one is a campaign I'm actually working on for personal use, but it's been a while since I posted anything here. If anyone else looks at this, likes it, and decides to run it, by all means tell me about it! Also, if you have any thoughts, concerns, additions or alterations in mind, post them here
The player characters are the most recent reincarnation of a group of heroes from several thousand years ago. These heroes saved the world, albeit at great cost. Whatever they did, it saved the world but destroyed a country. This could have been an acceptable loss, as the country was an unfriendly rival to their own homeland. However, one of the group, an alchemist, was from that rival country and had a young wife and daughter there. He had protested, stating that with a little more time they could find a way to save the world without having to destroy his home. The party, either through impatience or ignorance, ignore his concerns and go to activate the object/machine/relic that saves the world. The alchemist tries to fight them, but a party of adventurers against one man can really only end one way. Within an inch of his life, the alchemist watches in powerless horror as the party saves the world by destroying his.
Quaffing his last healing potion and a potion of invisibility, the alchemist slips away and spends the next several years acquiring ultimate power. On attaining it, he proceeds to wreak bloody revenge on his former friends. He kills their friends, families, and everyone they know to goad them into a final confrontation. In this confrontation, he swears vengeance directly to them - stating he will not rest until he's visited his pain and loss back on them a thousand-thouandfold, and completely lays waste to them. It is now the present, and every century or so since then he has done something to reform his old adventuring party (minus himself). Through a series of alchemical simulacra and doppelgangers, he interacts with them and after some time he facilitates them remembering their original incarnations. When they do, and discover who and what he is, he wreaks his revenge and begins the cycle anew.
What has changed this incarnation, and how will that help the party to defeat the alchemist and break the cycle?
