Hey guys, not so much a problem (or if it is it's a good problem to have) more looking for advice.
I've recently started DMing being new to D and D with a group of players who are also new to it. As it's going so well and our friends group has been talking about it, some friends we have that are only in the area rarely (due to being in the army or living in other continents) would like to try playing and find out what D and D is all about when they are back.
My idea was to have a NPC that I would be creating anyway built as a character for that specific night and let the new player control them.
Has anybody had any experience on this or have any thoughts about it? My inspiration to do this comes from Critical Role as they often have guests on the show.

Haha, well you mention the place I was going to tell you to check out. The thing that is important is how often they will be in the game, and how reliable they are to be there. From there you can choose how the NPC fits into your story and world. If they are a one time only then make a one time NOV, or if you think they will come in and come out think of potential ways to make that happen. Pike phasing in and out through the power of her god. Or if you had a sneakier character they could just step from the shadows with no explanation at all to keep the mystery. The absolute number one thing in my mind is to build the NPC as if you are prepared that the person won't be there. That way they are enhancing the experience rather than potentially mess things up by not showing up.

My thoughts so far is (spoiler alert for the mines of Phandelver) that I could make him a member of the Lords Alliance (they have already met Sildar and saved him and they have just killed Glassstaff), so was thinking along the lines of Sildar having contacted the alliance and the guest players character being sent to help with the goings on of the town and he can then help with whatever mission they do and after the mission he can report back to the Lords Alliance that way it makes sense why he is there and why he leaves it'll be a once every 6 months or so deal I think so not nearly as regular as Pike.
Also I'm thinking of having him craft the gauntlet of Moradins Divinity before leaving for the player that lost fingers (you helped me with suggestions on this in another post recently).
I have discussed the guest member playing with the group and they are all very happy with the idea so that's a big help too.
