My players are level 12 almost 13, and they have the chance to get a Wish from a Djinn Noble named Aurora. She is generally friendly toward the group, so I don't want the players to fear "the DM is going to screw us over here guys" mentality.
Essentially, Aurora can always say "That wish is not within my power" kind of like Shenron in DBZ if they ask for something ridiculous, but the next problem I came into was this....
Ultimately I expect 2 themes of story motivated wishes:
1) Something that helps the PC's
2) Something that harms or hinders the BBEG
Out of game, they asked me the following:
Q1) Can we wish for the BBEG to die?
A1) There are a number of story reasons that won't work, including the above comment Aurora would make.
Q2) Can we wish to simply halt the progress of the BBEG?
A2) Likely the same problem as question 1. Outside of Aurora's power.
Q3) Can we wish to know the BBEG's True Name?
A3) Enter the paradox of true names....I made it such that Wish needs to be specific to a person so much so, that names and titles MAY not exclude all others and therefore the wish affects multiple people. eg) "I wish Unther was dead" now everyone named Unther is now dead, not just the Unther you intended.
The ONLY way to truly get a wish to specifically affect only 1 individual, you would need to use their True Name in the Wish. Therefore, this wish is impossible as well, because you need the True Name, to wish for the True Name.
Are my answers to their questions not fair to the PC's in the sense that I'm almost entirely eliminating Theme #2 for story motivated wishes?
I don't plan on twisting it on them much, if at all, if they are responsible with the wish and don't metagame the wish in the classical "DM vs Player" mentality that the Wish spell tends to bring out at the table....
Any suggestions or your stories of how Wish went horribly wrong for your groups would be appreciated!
