Im a new DM. Ive finally gotten a group of new to D&D players to play. I have used the Podcast like a +10 Magical Tome of Information. Ideas, world building, character creation everything. I did our first game and character creation on one Sunday afternoon. Ill say that my error began in how I enticed my players to try out D&D and to give more or less free license on what kind of character they could play.
(I have PDF Character sheets from I want to say 3.5ish...these sheets I thought would make life easier for me and my players. These are the sheets like Hexblade, Warlock, Ninja, Crusader, Samurai all of those classes plus maybe 15 more.)
Well because I offered those sheets the players chose those classes. Looking back of course the name and archetype is labeled on the sheet. With a group that has never opened up a book of D&D before they are able to look at a list and say "Yeah this looks good I want to play an X"
So here is my dilemma. I outlined a world with 3 continents
1. A Good Human world fields, castles think dark ages Europe. No large governments small countries so we can go from Democratic Republic to Dictator in a few days of Travel. (Players are currently here. Which lies my problem see below)
2. Neutral Dwarven Mountains, Elvish forests some Human settlements.
3. Evil post apocalypse land Orcs, Goblins, ogres, Vampires, If its Evil they are here have a piece of land and a city where they are the majority.
Well due to these Sheets the characters used and I wanted to run a Good campaign. The more and more I look at the character sheets the Players are all EVIL!!
I have a stepson Ninja, a Brother-in-law Hexblade and a Warlock(Witch) Step-Daughter playing!!
I have the players all together in game working for an Adventures guild that has lost its reputation they all joined up because gold, and quick advancement in the AVG due to leadership being kicked out.
So I was listening to the words of the Demi-God DM Neil? In the Psionics Episode and an Idea occurred to me when they brought up using an illusion spell to hide or show anything. I thought well either I change up a bunch of other things class, my semi planned out adventure, the world thats been built yadda yadda and everything basically that I have had my players do so far....
Or I do this maybe a little dark but it would be a major plot twist. (Note*Players are lvl 1 currently half way through a dungeon where they are slaughtering Kobolds, Goblins and even a female bugbear half way through.)
My twist idea is this they continue through the dungeon hacking through the rest of the kobolds, goblins and finish the boss battle with the BugBear at the end of this they catch a glimpse of a Mindflayer and or Good Looking Magician Wizard in a Mirror in this final battle room.
All of a sudden this in not a dungeon. That was not a Bugbear but a Lawful Good King they are in a Throne room not covered in the blood of Goblins and Kobolds but the blood of Human guards and gnomes. They have hacked and slashed their way and killed one of the most beloved Good Kings in the continent.
At this point I leave it to the players do they say "F it we are the king slayers" and continue their reign of terror? Or do they make a shift and decide they want to figure out who the Wizard was who tricked them? When they leave and go back to the town they left originally to collect the reward the town is an Evil outpost with bad people and bad things going on.
Please any ideas, Criticisms are more than welcome. Hate on it. Tear it apart don't be gentle. I need criticism on this idea.
Thank you in advance.
