Hey guys, semi-new DM here and have been listening my way through the backlog of shows. I forget in which episode but someone in the mail bag suggested leveling weapons and, with me having an ongoing love/hate relationship with wow and seeing the newest expansion (it adds weapons at max level which you spend time leveling up and unlocking new traits and "golden traits" (superior traits).)
Anyway, I've started fiddling with the idea of a weapon that levels every level with you and gains new traits (Major/Minor/Out of Combat/Etc.). At this point I should probably mention i'm playing 5e. The main idea is that these weapons will put the players on a higher level, the encounters will need to be adjusted accordingly. For this I was thinking of (at least for 5e), was something like, in the DMG on page 82 it gives a table for scaling encounters, well using that as a base, maybe bump all the "Encounter Modifiers" up by one (1 = x1.5, 2 = x2, 3-6 = x2.5, 7-10 = 3, 11-14 = x4, 15+ = 5x) and for the "XP Thresholds by Character level" we could raise them all by a factor of 1.25 or 1.5. Also you could change the attunement rules to allow for attunement to only 2 Items (1 + the weapon).
The goal of this is a few things:
1) Make this the only weapon the players ever use.
2) Make the battles more fierce and deadly.
3) Generally raise the difficulty of combat and allow for a wider array of encounters.
At this point I've gotten a rough draft together and I'm gonna spend the next few days converting it over to the Homebrewery. I would love any ideas/tips/anything else you think might be relevant or useful info. Once I get my draft up I'll be posting it here and on Reddit. I'll be checking the thread as much as possible and i hope you guys can help me with this because at this point it seems like a balancing nightmare.
Cheers,
