Another in a long list of good eps!
Here's my take on Dragons...
Dragons (like Vampires and Liches) are intelligent and long lived. You don't get to be that way by being stupid.
They should always be ongoing villains, not one off fights.
They should have subtle and non-subtle minions.
They should have multiple traps in their lairs. And in the backup lairs.
If you have them as shapeshifting and interacting with human society, then they run a thieves guild or arcane cabal.
Get these amusing mortals to do something useful, make the dragon more powerful.
I've always treated Dragons as powerful casters, because if you live for hundreds of years it seems natural to learn a great deal of one of the paths of magic.
2nd & 3rd edition where they had 12 ages of dragons I said the age was the caster level, then pick a suitable path.
For 5th edition i'd go wyrmling=3rd level caster, young=6th level caster, adult=9th level caster, ancient=12th level caster.
Try not to go for the obvious evoker wizard, have fun, go green dragon-fiend warlock or black dragon-druid.
Expanding on Chris idea -
If you drink/touch red dragon blood, you can be immune to fire, breath fire 3d6 30ft range 6*day, duration 2 weeks.
but also you smell like a fire creature, so water, earth and air creatures will act like you are aligned with efreeti or azer etc Maybe plants wither from your touch or animals wimper once they smell you.
If you eat/touch a dracolich bone marrow, you could be immune to necrotic, chill touch 6*day, duration 2 weeks.
But people feel the coldness from you, priests of the sun detect you as undead, undead don't sense your presence etc.
Expanding on Mitch idea -
You could have dragons 'age' be in tune with magical power or accomplishment, so their listed 'age' is not a measure of time but a measure of how much they've done and learned. This way the dragons can 'age' within a short period of time along with their mortal companions. This also would make the Dragons come out of their lairs and interact with the world since its the quickest way to 'age'.
Mortals and Dragons would seek to get them on side, or see them as a threat and take them out of the picture.
Whether its flying dragons taking the heroes to floating sky islands, or swimming dragons (black, bronze, gold, green, white) taking the heroes underwater, this is a great option to make the campaign more 3d.
