Yesterday's session was awesome on so many levels and I have to share with everyone.
1st a bit of set up. Our party is a Elven rouge, dwarf cleric, human bard, shifter ranger, Goliath psionic, and a dwarf invoked. 4e, lv 9.
They are currently trying to find out why the Rangers cousin isn't dead anymore and why there an undead army.
I also have said that I am not out to kill the players. We here to have fun. But if they get them selves into a stupid spot I will kill them.
So they sneak around the army and decided to break into the castle strong hold by digging under it (Great escape style). But of course happen to land in a hall in the basement. Which they had no idea was there. They had two choice-go up the stairs or down the hall. Well they decided to expolore the basement. Which it was always my intention for the basement to the last thing they find- which if was the case it would have been much easier. But they had to do things the hard way.
They got past the traps (not that I was very surprised). 1st room FULL of ghosts. Damn Bard is able to roll a stupid dipomacy check and bluff the ghost to think the PC were part of the undead army. Ok that saves that fight.
Next room has a pool at one and clearly is a torture room. Couple of checks later the clerk and the invoked are feeling a huge amount of necrotic energy coming form beyond a wall at the end of the room. They check out the pool determine its about 20ft deep and has gated tunnel at the bottom. Of course they have to try and open. They have decided to get the source of the energy (which they have been able to scry and determine is a chest) to hopfully hinder the army. The bard and the ranger decide to check it out. The rouge would be best at the lock but she has a fear of diving into Unknown pools (last time she was eaten by a crocodile) so she was like nope not helping can we get out now?
So the two of them dive down tied off to each other and to the rest of the party. On the 1st try the Ranger rolls a 30 Thievery check and just matches the DC (she rolled a 19-damn the luck).
They get up to the chest. The bard grabs it and it burns his hands. pretty bad. So he dip his gloves in holy waters tries again. Chest sends out a shock wave throwing the bard off the pillar. He rolls a 1 on his dex check so he hit his head on the wall and falls into the water unconscious and bleeding. The ranger is able to cause the bard to float on the water face up and goes back to trying to get the chest. Does about as well as the bard but no explosion this time. She relays the situation to the rest of he party and they have a new plan.
The Ranger puts the chest in a bag of holding (yeah that's gonna come back to bite them later) but it still won't move. She cinches the bag around the pillar. Every one starts pulling on the rope and the ranger starts hitting the pillar with her magical digging tools. The group got two nat 20 and the rest 19's. Ranger takes damage. Brad takes even more damage but they are pulled safety.
They take a moment to breath. The clerk takes care of helping the bard and as they start to plan the exit, the only way is now blocked by the undead cousin and a number of undead troops. Which is whereas ended.
They pretty much went staight to the end. So what they don't know is A-The cousin in not the leader of the army (which is what they think). That is actually a Litch. Which they have not met yet and
B- they now have the chest that has his Phylactery. The bag of holding now weights 10lbs and feels like carrying a horacrux.
What makes this the best is the players were actually nervous thru the whole basement. And after the session as we were wrapping up they are talking about how screwed they are and how they may die and would actually deserve the death.
Long story short. They are screwed. I can't wait for next week.
