Another Dm-nastics from yours truly to help give Dmmainprize a little bit of time to decompress after his Icelandic Adventure. Given that the latest episode was focused on Survival and Horror I thought it would be great to work on our ability to scare our players. There are tons of different ways to accomplish this, and we heard a decent amount of them on the latest podcast. Describe what you think these names could do to players. Is it a debilitating poison or a terrible disease or any other terrifying thing you can dream up? 1. Hell's Fury 2. Dwarfrot 3. Coffinspire (because portmanteaus are amazing) Hopefully some truly terrifying things come from this. Can't wait to see what people come up with! Link to DM-Nastics Segment #1

1. Hell's Fury: An illness that can be contracted by coming into contact with an item soaked in the blood of a demon. When an individual is effected by Hell's Fury, they experience both a great surge in power and rage. They also become consumed with a desire to kill and create chaos by whatever means possible. The kicker is that in reality it is only the rage and desire that is real. The deadly power that comes with the illness is completely in the effected person's mind. Those who are effected with Hell's Fury usually end up dead, at the end of a town guard's spear for acts of atrocity that they commit while under the illnesses' effects.
2. Dwarfrot: A terrible disease that only effects dwarves. Dwarf rot works much like that of leprosy. The terrifying part is that unlike leprosy, in which the symptom of body parts actually falling off being only a myth, when it comes to Dwarfrot, this is the terrible truth. Those individuals who are effected by Dwarfrot are effected by a terrible skin disease that is complete with boils, flakiness and the peeling off of skin. Slowly the body becomes poisoned to the point that body parts, even limbs begin to fall off, until the dwarf is completely killed by the disease.
3. Coffinspire: A subtype of Mimic that assumes the form of a Coffin. They like to hide in catacombs and tombs, and wait for grave robbers to stumble upon them. Upon being disturbed, a Coffinspire will begin a grapple, and if successful will engulf the victim into it's body. A Coffinspire's stomach is lined with very thick tissue that makes the insides of it's body soundproof to the outside world. Poor victims who were alone when engulfed by a Coffinspire are doomed to death by the stomach acids of the monster, of which usually is a slow death, around 2d6 days.

1. Hell's Fury: Made from the refined ashes of slain demons. Once injected into the target it creates a burning sensation inside and out. The pain wracks the target so badly that they become incapacitated if they do not resist the poison.
2. Dwarfrot: Once infected with this disease the body begins to painfully shed its skin. The body also begins to shrink as the skin continually sheds. If the infected target does not save they will lose 1d6 inches of height per day until cured.
3. Coffinspire: A mind-affecting disease that creates an unhealthy fascination with death. The character is continually motivated to be in an area where creatures have been buried. They have an innate ability to find where creatures have been buried, and will do whatever is necessary to get to those places.

1. Hell's Fury: A sickening parasite that draws people into the embrace of fire. After going slightly insane, the victim tries burning itself, twisting and writhing in order to get every part of himself charred by flames. The disease is formed from the heart of only the vilest of villains, grows and twists until it is a living parasite. The villain's heart then breathes baby parasites into the air that infect nearby heroes or vermins.
2. Dwarfrot: Villiagers are terrified of the meer prospect of Dwarfrot. It starts of as a simple cough or bloody nose, but turns into something much worse. Victims would wake up to find themselves two feet shorter. It is impossible to stop this terrible disease from spreading amongst Villiagers. The wife of the mayor of a new Dwarfrot City was asked what her experience was with the disease. "It was horrible!" She replied, "One day you have a small, normal cough and then the next you have trouble reaching the salt in the cupboard!"
3. Coffinspire: The name of the Palace for the dead that are hanged in special ways. Tied by their hands and their feet onto long wooden boards, they are hung in the air, face down. Throughout the palace one can hear the cries of freshly hanged victims who twist and writhe. Woman, men, and children scream and cry for freedom. But they hang instead, strips of meat and flesh dripping to the ground of Coffinspire. The Coffinspire looks like a jagged tooth with a long staircase running along the outside of it. Inside it is impossible to see the ceiling, only the hanging bodies stretching into darkness.

Hell's Fury: A chronic eye infection acquired when the blood of corporeal demons splashes your face, or from handling a fiend's bloodied corpse and touching your face without washing your hands. The bacteria causes the blood vessels in the eye to become highly inflamed, turning the sclera red, and causing a dark red or black liquid to leak from the tear ducts. The infected person's vision also becomes tinted red, eventually leading to blindness as the bacteria proliferates and penetrates the lens.
Dwarfrot: An effect of non-dwarves consuming certain dwarven food and beverages made from mushrooms. The spores of some exotic fungal species are able to take root and germinate in the digestive tract of non-dwarves. Early symptoms include intense abdominal pain and blackened feces. Weakness and paralysis ensue as the growing fungus releases toxins into the bloodstream. If left untreated, the intestines become necrotic and the victim dies. Black, rotten smelling mushrooms erupt from the mouth and anus of an infected corpse within days. As the body decomposes, the fungus will also burst through the abdominal wall, and eventually cover the entire body.
Coffinspire: A euphemism for the feces of ghouls, and a sure sign they are lurking around whatever location it is found.
(woo, I got to mention feces twice in one post!)

This has such a great Walking Dead vibe to it. With a solid description and a sound set this would be a truly creepy experience for players.

I really like this description, and want this to be a very real place in a world or module. This has such a great Walking Dead vibe to it. With a solid description and a sound set this would be a truly creepy experience for players. I got the idea from a novel I wrote. In it the protagonist walks into his room and finds bodies hanging from the ceiling, but far enough from the ground that his head didn't bump into them. Even though the scene was supposed to be funny, it still creeped me out a little. And then the name Coffinspire supplied the rest of the ideas...

Man I love these things.
OK so I read that 1st one as Hell's furry so I'm running with that.
Hell's Furry- The party enters a small village. The 1st thing they notice are a rather large number of critters. The children of the town are all playing with rabbits, squirrels, puppies, kittens, all sorts of critters. Occasionally the party notices a twist to the faces of the critters. Their shadows seem to move separate from the critters body. The adults of the town act strange and basically do everything the children tell them to. In the town there is a pet shop with a strange woman working at the counter. There are no cages in this pet shop. The woman is very rude to the party and any other adults at the shop. She is however extremely nice to the children. She will not sell pets to the party unless they push to much and then she has 1 specific pet she will sell. To make a long story short. Eventually through role play and investigation they find that the critters are demons summoned by the woman to protect the children. When she was a child her parents would not let her have pets. She was beaten by her mother her whole life until 1 night she has a dream where she is approached by a giant demonic looking bunny. She makes a deal with this demonic patron (maybe she's a warlock) to give her the power to protect her self from her parents. The next morning she awakens to find a bunny sitting on her bed. When her mother come in yelling for her to get out of bed the bunny grows horns and fangs and kills the mother and father. The party ends up fighting the woman and her hundreds of demonic critters.
Dwarfrot- There is a group of dwarves deep with in the caverns in Moradin's Wall. They have been cursed. This curse leaves them hairless. Have you ever seen a hairless dwarf??? 'Nuff said.
Coffinspire- In a small valley hidden by shadow and mist lies a tall, crooked tower. Home to a vicious twisted hag. As you ascend the stairs of this tower you notice the walls are lined with coffins. Upon inspection you find the the coffins are filled with lifeless bodies in various state of decay. There are (however many members there are in the party) empty coffins at the top of the stairs just out a gnarled oak door. Behind the door you find Makrine Grimsblood. The coffins below are filled with her previous victims. She let's out an blood curdling howl and attacks. You hear the scrapes and moans of the undead below as coffins crash open. No where to run...

Hell's Fury
Hell's Fury is a cult, worshipers of Demons and Devils, any mention of the cult will get you killed so not many people will talk about it. It is said even those who mention it when they think no one is around to hear turn up dead. The victims that are found will be covered with cuts and bites, though these are no ordinary wounds, every mark on them is surrounded by blistered burns as if the fires from Hell caused them. The demonic script is also commonly found burned into the flesh as if with a branding iron or carved with a red hot knife. Reports of victims with the same types of wounds have been uncovered in most places around the world, though nobody mentions the group when another body is discovered it is widely known that nothing else could or would leave those marks.
If anyone speaks to you of the group say your goodbyes to that person and pray that only they are taken.
