D&D: A long time ago I read a very small article on "roleplaying" and I instantly wanted to try it. The author listed several types of RPG's: Judge Dredd, Superheroes, Warhammer, and D&D. I heard of D&D before, but I knew little about it. So I got into Warhammer instead. After hundreds of dollars spent on the game and lots of research I suddenly came to the realization that Warhammer was not a RPG (not the Warhammer). But, I spent too much money to turn around, until one day, while looking for a wargaming podcast, I stumbled upon The Dungeon Masters Block on iTunes. They were on there third episode I think and I instantly wanted to try D&D again. I am still a heavy Warhammer player (got too many Mirkwood elves to stop), but I am ordering the D&D player handbook and starter set in a desperate attempt to start my own game. Favorite Movies: Lord of the Rings Guardians of the Galaxy Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Wreck-it Ralph
Favorite Super-Heroes Mr.Fantastic/Daredevil Hank McCoy (The Original Beast) Captain Marvel (stupid skrull...) Star-Lord Thor
Favorite Video-Games: Half-Life Advanced Dungeons & Dragons for Atari (trust me, it has nothing to do with D&D) Legend of Zelda Final Fantasy I-VI Metroid: The Other M

Welcome to the forums and to DMing! I haven't run it myself, but I've heard good things about the starter set adventure and listened to a couple podcasts where they ran through it (Tabletop Adventures was a pretty good one; first time DM and new players running the starter set). It seems fairly well done. I'd say start with that, but with the caveat that you should feel open license to change whatever you don't like and feel free to go "off book".
Good luck! Always remember: if you're having fun, you're doing it right.

almarianknight, I am so glad that we were able to rekindle your rpg spark! I really am glad you are getting your feet wet with some D&D. I hope that our podcast can really aid you as you begin your first campaign.
Side note: while I never played warhammer, I did play the games worskshop lord of the rings battle game. I still use the many minis for D&D.

I know all too well what hundreds of dollars sent Games Workshop's way looks like. I have three Warhammer 40k armies. I loved the Starter Set and it is well worth the money. I would listen to the Adventure Zone as they do a play through of it, but really go off book, as Friartook mentioned. I will also wholeheartedly agree with him, and dmmitch and dmchris that having fun is always, and will always be, the number one success factor for a DM. Happy to see a new DM join the community! Definitely check out the DM-nastics and try your hand at them.

I play both Warhammer 40k and The Lord of the Rings. I had decided on an Astra Militarum army, but the Space Wolves fluff was far too cool to pass up. Plus, they are Vikings in space what's not to like? In Lord of the Rings I have a good sized elven army (which is a good mash of Mirkwood, Rivendell, and Lothlorien) which I use to spam magic in all directions. I am planning to tweak the adventure a bit. Thanks for the advice.

Agreed! A fellow Son of Russ! I went with Necron as my other because space zombies. I also have a fluff Squat army that I play as guard if I play them, because space dwarves! Granted they were killed off by the Tyranid YEARS ago in the lore and haven't been heard from since. I recently ran the started set with a very interesting group. There was the Halfling Bard named Brad Pitt and that alone should tell you that inside the box isn't a big thing for that group, haha. If you have questions about it let us all know and I'm sure you will get more help than you can handle, haha.

Welcome, Welcome. Glad to have you here on the forums. I was only DM through one night of the starter set and it was really well done. We had a ton of fun. Just make sure your players avoid the wolves that are chained up in the first cave you come across. They tpk'd our whole party. Bad rolls helped their cause quite a bit. None the less good luck and have fun!

I did, and thought to ask if he was eavesdropping, but knew he would say "I ain't been dropping no eaves!" I t was more that I assumed he had likely had a lot of attention drawn to that fact over the years, and figured nothing original could be said about it, haha. Welcome, Welcome. None the less good luck and have fun! This, very much this. I think that lower levels of D&D 5E, rules as written, are extremely lethal. It harkens back to the older editions where if you lived through the first stages of adventuring you felt like you had truly accomplished something. I would like to draw specific attention to Inflict Wounds. It is a first level spell that after a successful melee touch attack you deal 3d10 damage ... I don't ... 30 points of damage potential ... wha ... 1st level!? All you need is a few evil clerics and your party will never survive, haha.

That's one of the things I LOVE about 5E. It harkens back to the AD&D days where Wizards were 1d4 HP! HA HA!
In all seriousness, I'm a huge 5E fanboy and can't stop gushing about it. It's like they took the best parts of every edition so far and come up with Paragon D&D! (That's the 3E use of Paragon; aka: Epic Level, not the 4E use. Heh heh heh.). It can be lethal, but the ability to use Dodge and Disengage as actions really help. Yeah you give up your attack that round, but in lower levels, one good hit can bring you down to 1-2 HP left and it's quite a help if that happens. Speaking of help...don't forget the Help action too, to give an adjacent ally Advantage. Sometimes it's better to buff an ally, than make the hit yourself...depending on where you and they are in the initiative round.

I noticed that 5e seemed a lot more "story-driven" (more) than 4e. This is one of the things that drew me to 5e. But, pretty much everything I am geeking over probably was in the last editions and everyone who has played D&D would probably say 'uh... duh'. Like, the fact that the different types of dice look amazingly cool (obviously I am tired of d6).

They look cooler than they roll if that makes sense. It is kinda hard to effectively roll them without them getting away from you. The other issue is that sometimes they are difficult to read. The one that is my favorite dice lately is d12s that act as d4s so that you don't have to throw around those annoying pyramids, haha.

I guessed that would be the case, but still, I can't help adding in Final Fantasy fanfare when somebody roles a 20.
