I have been the DM for my parties for years now, and while I love that side of the screen I can get burnt out from time to time. As I mentioned it was a pair of brothers who introduced me into the hobby, and at this point their sons are old enough to start playing with the rest of the group. I recently came up with the idea that when there is a good break point in my campaign to have others run a one off that takes up a few sessions, so that I can have a break, so that I can be a player, so that I can prep for more of the campaign, and to give others a shot at DMing. I chose the two boys so that they can get DMing experience. So far we have only had one such side campaign and it was amazing.
Essentially the party (5th level characters) doesn't know each at all, but each member received a message from Lord Archibald Lazarus to attend a gala of sorts. It was essentially to find the best warriors in the realm which I assumed would lead to gladiatorial games of some sort. Thankfully I had created a Dwarf Brawler (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/hybrid-classes/brawler) essentially a fighter/monk mix. There was a lot of booze flowing, and unfortunately it was poisoned. However, I was able to save against the poison while no other party member and was left alone surrounded by a dozen thugs. I let myself get knocked out as it seemed the more sensible thing to do. We all woke up in the dungeon minus our weapons, and had the choice of some very basic items each time we went out into the arena. Come to find out Lord Archibald Lazarus was in fact an undead lord who was trying to create an undead army, and is using the gladiatorial games to find his champion. We fought undead raptors at one point, and an awesome monster combo of a goblin shooting a crossbow from the back of a troll. We eventually thwarted the evil lord and were able to go on our way.
I can't wait to get to the next break point to give others a shot at DMing!
