This is an amazing idea for a creature/monster. How would (if one was to put it in a game) it interact with players? Does it speak in an intelligent manner, like a vampire? Or maybe it sniffs like the ring wraiths? Really cool idea!

Or maybe it sniffs like the ring wraiths? Really cool idea! The way they interact with players depends on the form they are in. In both forms they can understand any language they knew in life before passing into the shadowland. In physical form they can speak in just as they could in life. But in shadow form they act very must like ring-wraiths sniffing about for things to kill. Mostly they would raid or attack villages at night. I can imagine that some villages could be completely overrun in a single night. So that it just becomes a ghost town to anyone who passes by. All the villagers gone, turned into zombies and sent through the Hunando to become Durnosse themselves. Pretty freaking scary.

Pretty freaking scary and awesome. I was actually thinking about making a Durnosse the main villain in my first campaign. So if you have any other information on the creatures or any ideas I would love to hear them. I feel like these creatures could make a really great villain. I assume that they retain some of their original personality after becoming Durnosse or is it more like the ring-wraiths where their personalities are warped?

Ya I would say they retain some of there personality. But I didn't really see them in my world as villains. By that I mean they aren't the big bad guy. They are more of a large army of dark beings that represents the manifestation of the evil powers from beyond the shadow land into the prime world. In my worlds layout there is a primary plane and 2 mirror worlds. Beyond the 2 mirror worlds are realms(actually planets but not perceived that way by the primary worlds inhabitants) these places are where the gods reside. The gods are locked out of the prime world by the god gates. But lesser beings and servants of the gods can pass from their realms through the mirror worlds and through the god gates to get into the prime world thus doing the bidding of their source deity. The Durnosse are men who drifted into the shadowland and were corrupted by its darkness. They represent the army of a being beyond the real world. Now all that being said. You can take the template and ideas for them and do whatever you want!! Thats the beauty of D&D. If you want to use a Durnosse as a big bad villain please please do and let me know how it goes. My world is still in its baby stages and I have a long way to go. Perhaps down the road there will be a hierarchy of Durnosse that would give room for a villain to be among them. Perhaps a Durnosse kills a powerful hero or PC and that character becomes a Durnosse themselves and becomes such a villain. Please let me know what you think. If you check out my world-building post there are lots of links to my google drive that have more info on the matter.

I was thinking of the Durnosse being a minion of some larger power, but (since I am going to begin with a shorter game) I was hoping to get the players to focus much of their 'enmity' against this Durnosse minion. I am excited and will definitely be reading more on your world.

I love the race's ability to create suspense without conflict. If a Durnosse is passing by the players in shadow form it could potentially harass them, but not actually care about them. Using the shadow form to more easily escape a conflict. Or to mortify your players by recreating that scene from Ghost! Tons of cool ideas for these guys. They also made me think of the post apoc idea of a widespread problem. They could be the basis for a campaign as the shadow world is pushing into the prime material plane.

That is a main piece of my worlds timeline way in the future. The evil powers from beyond try to cover the whole of the world in darkness and terror by turning every living creature into Durnosse.
