I was thinking about half-giants for Dark Sun, and this is what I came up with in 5E. They might seem OP to some at first look, but remember that in the Dark Sun setting of Athas an increased need for food and especially water is a serious disadvantage. Desert survival features heavily in the setting and in many of the adventures set there, and living is generally more difficult and expensive than in other settings.
Half-Giants
Ability Score Increases. Your Strength and Constitution score increase by 2 each. A half-giant’s maximum natural Strength score is also 22 instead of the usual 20, and her maximum natural Dexterity score is 18 instead of 20.
Age. Half-giants mature at about the same rate as humans. Most of this time is spent eating ravenously and gaining size and weight.
Alignment. Half-giants tend to take on the alignment of their companions or society enthusiastically. A half-giant serving Preservers as a bodyguard might be studiously lawful good, while a half-giant fighting in an arena for a cruel master might be chaotic evil - and that could be the same half-giant at different times of her life. At the end of a game session, a half-giant’s player can change her character’s alignment one step along the good/evil or lawful/chaotic continuum, and erase her character’s Ideal and replace it with a new one to reflect her new alignment.
Size. Half-giants are large-sized, giving them advantage on most Strength checks like (Athletics) compared to medium creatures, and disadvantage on many Dexterity checks such as (Acrobatics) or (Stealth).
Speed. A half-giant’s base speed is 40.
Cost of Living. A half-giant’s cost of living is quadrupled. On Athas, half-giants are an expensive investment, and independent half-giants often have difficulty earning enough to survive despite their other advantages. When calculating for basic survival, half-giants require at least twice as much food and water as medium counterparts, and even then they are slowly dying of privation.
Weapons and Armor. Half-giant weapons, being large-sized, deal one category more base damage than medium-sized weapons. Half-giant weapons cost twice as much as the listed price and half-giant armor costs four times as much.
Languages. Half-giants begin play speaking whatever the most common language around them happens to be, or whatever their current or previous masters speak.
