WOTC is closing the D&D and MTG forums in October. The article is here. Better do a final once over to save anything you want. Also, 1st registered post.

I haven't really been apart of WOTC forums, however, I can understand why this would be dissapointing. That place had a lot of contributors with a lot of resources. I don't entirely agree with wizards in this article (but, then again, I'm in the minority without a true form of social media).

It does stink, but I like the direction that they are heading as far as communication things and what not. They seem to be doing it because there are so many places, like this forum, that are already doing what they are doing. WOTC seems to be in a good spot right now, and that can only mean good things for us. But that being said, get what you can out of it before it is finally closed!

Have they given any indication why they weren't at GenCon in any sizable way? I don't really follow the company the stuff, I tend to just play, but between them not being there and the quality of the first round of PHB (I've never had a PHB of any edition fall apart - and 3 of our players have already with light to no use) I'm a little down on them. This is one time I hope I'm wrong! I just see the energy and commitment that Paizo has to their products, and wish we could get the same from WoTC since they hold the edition I prefer at the moment.
Also, what are the plans for communication?

Also, what are the plans for communication? It's funny, I have the same problem with my 5E PHB. It's completely falling apart at the seams. I have a second edition book that I bet is over 20 years old and it's perfect. The content in the book is good, but yes, the quality of the book binding is not so much. I use the 5E DMG even more than than the PHB though, and so far it is holding together, so it may just be some bad PHB prints.

Supposedly it was a problem with the first printing only and they'll replace it for you if you can send it back and all that. I just know my old old D&D books have been through hell are holding up, and now suddenly I'm having to treat them gingerly and I'm just not a fan of the loss in quality. I might just be being an old man on my porch about it though

Any of us that have been playing D&D for multiple years have many old books that are quality and don't fall apart. They set the expectation long ago, now we expect it.

And those of us who are new on the scene aren't too suprised by the quality. But, I completely understand if you've been playing this for a while. I remember seeing 4e on the walls of Barnes and Nobles before I ever got into D&D. However, comparing the looks of the 5e book and the 4e book I am slightly disappointed. I think 4e's cover was much more compelling (dang, I didn't even recognize it as D&D and I wanted to buy it just for the cover). ...Perhaps one day I'll get my 5e book rebound with leather. with the D&D symbol stamped on it in red. That would be awesome.

I spent countless hours on the WotC forums. I only joined last September shortly after the PHB 5 came out, but racked up 850 posts in the year I had a presence there. When I read they were going away, I was pissed off and disappointed.
About two minutes later, I realized I would have soooo much more time to spend on more productive, or at least fun things than debating rules and stuff. While I always had the choice to walk away and recover that time before the announcement, it's so much easier when you know it'll be gone anyway. Now I've resumed work on my homemade TRPG system to fill the time until school starts. In short, the WotC forums going down is a blessing for me.

I've heard anecdotes saying they'd replace a first run PHB that's falling apart. Hasn't been a problem for me, and mine has seen a lot of travel (not to mention my kids getting into D&D...). That being said, my 2e books from the '80s are still hangin' in there no problem.

On the actual subject of this thread: I never spent much time on the WotC forums. I'm not really attached to them at all.
That being said, I find it odd that they are just closing the entire site down. Why not just lock all the forums and leave it up for a year or two? Let it be a standing resource archive. I understand that they would still have to pay for hosting, but a little advertising would have that pay for itself pretty quick. Seems like another corporate mandate from on high. The current downfall of WotC.
